How many people here have thrown a club into a water hazard?

I saw the thread on "hitting into the drink". Which I thought was odd, as I'm sure anyone who has played at least a couple of rounds has hit into the water.

But I was wondering how many here would confess to throwing a club into the 'drink'? If so, which club and why?

Myself, a 9 iron about 15 years ago. It was on a par 4 and from the tee, the "drink" (lol) was to the right and about 120 yards in front of the green. But it was not really in play unless you sliced your tee shot. Which I did. But the ball somehow managed to stay just on the edge of the water, and I really wound up with a decent 2nd shot back over the water to the green. IIRC, I was having a rather frustrating round and I was thinking of how lucky I was not to be in the water.

So then I topped the next shot into the water. My buddies laughed. I flung that 9 iron halfway across that pond. When it made a big splash, several people playing the other hole stopped and looked at me like I had lost my mind. It was a stupid thing to do, no doubt. But hey, at least I was playing with some cheap clubs at the time.

I play with Idea A2 OS hybrids.
But not for much longer .

No. I don't plan on it, but I broke my 9 iron before, and have thrown several balls into the water/o.b.

It was the fourth hole at my local course. Number 1 handicap. Sharp dogleg left uphill par 4. Wanted to put it just around the corner so I got my 9 iron.

First shot: hooked it into the woods
Second try: sliced it into the woods

I slammed my club down on the edge of the tee box (wood) and it snapped in two.

I have thrown a ball into the water... but never a club... well never a club on purpose!

I did launch a Ping demo iron into a pond when it slipped out of my hands in the rain... I also went for a swim to retrieve it while half the golf team stood on the shore laughing thier asses off.

my buddy let go(raining, slippery hands) of his driver and it went into the lake. since he has the same driver as me, i could feel the pain of losing a $500 driver. here's where it got interesting. the driver floats! but still, so far into the lake, no way of getting it back. so close, but so far.

we reluctantly continued our round, and a marshall came up to us in a power cart and pulled out his FT-1, and said, "is this your's by any chance?". haha, the wind blew it ashore and all ended happily.

I had sold a friend of mine a set of odd clubs, bag and all for probably around $20 or something like that. Anyway, a bunch of us (group of 8 or so) had gone on an outing one weekend and we of course were split into two groups. My friend was in the group ahead of us and we were waiting in the fairway for them to clear the green ahead of us. My friend of course was a beginner and we could easily see him chili-dip a chip shot. He proceeded to go back to his bag, put his wedge back in the bag, take another club out and walk over to the water hazard in front of the green and chuck it in the drink. All the guys in my group hit the ground, yelling and laughing. They couldn't believe what he had just done. I of course, having sold him the clubs, knew that the set came with 2 seven irons... one in pretty decent shape and one beat up pretty badly. I knew he had thrown the beat up seven iron in the drink, just for our benefit. When we caught up with them at the clubhouse, I asked him if that's what he had done, and sure enough it was. It was hilarious.

No, but I rimmed out 7 putts in 7 holes, and hit my ball in the woods about 200 yds. Made almost every putt after that. It was surely the ball!

did your buddy not know how to swim or what... I'd be in that lake so fast for an FT-i or other new driver.

Not me. I've seen one thrown in (accidentally) in real life, and we've all seen it on TV.

I don't throw clubs. It's never their fault I've hit a bad shot or whatever.

No clubs, nor balls. Definitely not the whole bag ( a friend of mine got his whole set one day when his dad was out golfing and a playing partner threw his whole bag in - - -his dad went in and got it and brought it home. Luckily they were on the 17th hole!). Wow some pretty wild stories.

I've never seen it happen up close. However, a few years ago my buddy was looking for his ball close to a water hazard, and he spotted something in the water. He pulls out a ball retriever and proceeds to pull out a really sweet Ping anser putter(looked like it was in there a while). He takes it to the pro shop and the pro tells him to keep it. He cleans it up, regrips it, and is still using it to this day.

Years ago....at a local course named Goshen Plantation.

There is a straight par five with a pond bordering on the left and edge of the green.

I absolutely nutted a drive that left me a wedge in. It was a fluke....wind at my back...ball teed up sort of thing that the swing just worked out wonderfully.

I chunked the wedge shot and had a meltdown....mad as fire.....I slung the wedge into the water hazard.

I was immediately embarrassed and wished I could have taken the act back. My playing partner, Jon, was also embarrassed by my stupidity.

Never do it again. I didn't replace that club for several months....simply to punish the stupid act.

I saw the thread on "hitting into the drink".

Thank you, I know I'm amazing Nah I have never thrown a club in the drink but I might consider doing it next time out, sounds like a good idea

Things I Am Good at in Golf

- Hitting it in the drink
- Finding the rough with my drive
- Staying in the bunker- Hitting grassburners all the way to the hole- Three putting- Posting over par on 18 in only 9 holes- Swinging and missing with an iron

I've broken a few clubs out of anger(snap shafts), but I would never go that far. I can deal with paying for new shafts, but not with losing an entire club.

I've never thrown or broken a club out of anger, but my grandparents live on the 17th green of my home course (Mayfair CC), which has a pond green-side. Needless to say, I bet I could find about 20 good balls and 3 or 4 good shafts (that was a joke if you're clever), in the drink. Really funny to watch guys throw and break clubs, cursing all the way from the safety of a porch. Our seats are about 30 yards left of the Green, so we still get guys who literally will pitch over the pond, while playing not 6 or 7 feet from us. Some are so mad they don't look up, as it's the 17th so a poor shot can cost a round.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
