As my sidebar suggests I spend some time in the UK and grew up there learning to play the game. A friend of mine who recently took up the sport reminded me of some of nicknames we used:

Sally Gunnell - an ugly runner (ball that shoots along the ground when mishit) Paula Radcliffe - not quite as ugly as Sally Gunnell and goes a bit further, but still a runner Adolf Hitler - taking two shots in the bunker Sister Sh*gger - You're up there, but you know you shouldn't be (i.e. you hit a poor shot, but end up in a good position) Arthur Scargill - Great strike, poor result

Some of these names may not be familiar particularly with our American friends; Sally Gunnell, as the name suggests, was a female sprinter that wasn't too attractive. Arthur Scargill was the head of the National Union of Mineworkers and responsible for the well known (in Britain) 1984-1985 miners strike.

Another one used in place of the Sally Gunnell was 'worm burner'.

A course in my home town called Eagle Bend is located just behind the dam to a lake called Clinton Lake. The course is locally as "Monica Lewinsky" because it's 'below Clinton'.

When someone outdrives everyone in the group and makes bogey you can call him "long drive five"

a snap hook, or duck hook - is called a 'German ball' or a "Duckhookin****er"

I just laughed aloud in the middle of class at the Adolph Hitler... People are looking at me funny.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

Funny you mentioned this as I played today with a guy and his putt lipped 180* around the hole. He said that's a Lewinsky as it is all lip and no hole

Give us the reference to the original thread so we can get "caught up."

And, there was an old book by Chi Chi Rodriquez in which he had a name for all kinds of different shots. I dimly recall is was like reading 101 ways to play a chip or pitch shot and each had a pet-like nickname.

Some of these are sexist, that's fine as long as we all have a sense of humor:

Ugly with Big T!ts--usually a skulled shot that ends up close to the intended target
Brown Bag Special--any ugly shot that turns out OK
Snake or "Three Jack" --- 3 putting
"Sally" or "insert wife or girlfriend's name"---leaving a putt significantly shorter than intended
"Turkey Leg or left some chicken on the bone"----same as above
"The Nuts" or "En Fuego" Playing five or six holes in a row par or under par. DO NOT say this or suffer the appropriate consequences.
"Neil Armstrong"---sky ball
"Let the Big Dog Hunt" ---pulling out the driver when 3wood/5wood is probably the smart play off the tee

Chilli Dip--hitting a pitch shot or chip shot very fat
"Air ball"---completely missing the shot
"If I didn't see it, it didn't happen"--when playing with close friends that aren't good at golf, when they hit a terrible shot. You are saying take a mulligan, it never happened.
"Spicy" or "Juicy" sometimes emphatically pronounced "jowowowowuuusy" very pretty shot
Al Cowlings---your best friend. "I played with Al today, my score might have some gimmies"

Joe DiMaggio - Dead Yank
Ladyboy - looks like an easy hole, but may not be what it seams
O.J. - somehow got away with it
Rock Hudson - thought it was straight, but wasn't

My Favorite.... Rodney King - over clubbed

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee
