im a sophmore in high school and im trying to make the varsity golf team next year and im facing a difficult decesion. I need to know what clubs to put into my bag. The course we play on is NOT my home course, and at my home course i have elimintated use of a 56 degree wedge, but i really need it at this course because it is short. Not only is it short, but it is also very tight, i have a hook, and im afraid to bring driver for fear of going into the trees.

Distance:

250 drviver
230 3 wood
215 2 iron hybrid
205 3 iron hybrid
195 4 iron
185 5 iron
175 6 iron
165 7 iron
150 8 iron
140 9 iron
130 pitching wedge
115 gap wedge
75 lob wedge

You'll notice a large distance gap between my lob wedge and gap wedge, i am not good at taking that much distance off with a gap wedge. However, i can hit a sand wedge about 95 yards, which would provide easier short range shots. What i am hoping to do, if you dont think i should use a driver, is to DEMO a STRONG THREE WOOD, and take out both my driver and my three wood, and add to my bag a 56 degree sand wedge. Finally, i would like to mention that i am in the middle on distance off the tee as far as the team goes, the furthest guy goes about 295 and the shortest about 225 with a driver. Any advice is appreciated.

Please dont pull a phil mickelson and take the driver out of your bag spend the money you would have spent on a strong three wood on lesons to elimate your hook.

Put your 56* back in the bag and take out the 2-iron hybrid...

At the high school level you will learn really quick that the game is played with good wedges from 125 yards in... and a good putter. (excuse me... that's sound advice for all of us )

If you're playing a short course and you're teeing off with a 3-iron there is no use thinking that hitting a butter-knife 2-iron over a 3-iron is the better option.

Obsessedgolfer gave some great advice. Get a swing coach to help get rid of the hook. You'll reach your goals faster with professional help.

Keep us posted. You're a lucky guy to be in a position to be playing HS golf. It's a great experience.

Hit'm straight!

i currently work with a swing coach, and its not a terrible hook, i just feel that it is a little too wild. I should also mention that there are 2 holes in which i need to hit the ball 235-245 yards, which is impossible for me to do with the three wood thats in my bag. and i dont feel like i should take out the 2 iron wood, its my fall back club when i need to hit the ball perfectly straight.

i need to convince the pro and my parents to let me demo a strong 3 wood for tryouts. I can hit like 240, 10 yards shorter, with a slight draw that can avoid the trees.

How short is the course? I play for the whites on our course. Only like 5900 yards but I only use my 3 iron off the tee. You should be good enough with out it to make the team. What kind of score do you need for 9?

we play the tips and i think its like 5800-6000 yards. I need to shoot like 83 at the worst to even have a chance. At this place, if you hit it straight i could shoot 68, but if im hitting a little wild i could shoot 95.

65% of the game will come from your wedges and in. Don't be too concerned about your tee shots vs. wedges in your hand. It seems like you are doing OK with the tee to fairway after the extra information you supplied. I think you have the tools and the game to go for it without the demo. But, IF... you believe in your heart that getting the strong 3 wood (I'm assuming a 13*???) is going to help you, then get it and take out the 3-iron. Keep your 56* and work with that club.

PS... my son was a two-time Ohio Div1 All-State player and plays Div1 college golf. I know what you are going through. Good luck!

I would consider taking the 3 hybrid out and practicing choking up on the 2 hybrid to take something off the club to replace the distance of the 3 hybrid. put the missing wedge back in your bag and learn to hit a power fade.

power fade with the driver
keep the face slightly open throughout the swing, do not turn over the club face. the ball will start straight and have a slight fade, that will allow you to hit more fairways on the tight course. Also, be aware of how you take your back swing......is it inside the line (draw), down the line (straight) or just outside the line (fade).

Maybe you could sell your tour burnerer driver and get the 2007 burner tp I say this because the face is like 2 degrees open rather than 1 degree closed so with a draw you will hit the ball straight, or you could get the callaway ft 5 fade version to fix your hook.

I think you need to get a SW in your bag. And to make room for it I would take a long hard look at the top of the set. You don't want less than 15 yards gap up there and I firmly believe 20 yard gaps are fine when you get around 200ish. If you can't hit with a 10% margin of error on average(and that would be pro level I think) odds are you won't get within 20 yards of your target anyway at those distances.

Get real honest with yourself about those upper distances, what you can and can't do with those clubs, and how many times in a round you hit them. There will be several times that you'll hit a SW close enough to hole the next shot. It happens far less with 2 and 3 iron/hybrids.

As for the driver, a little more loft would straigten you out and make those AVERAGE drives better. And like another poster said, watch out for those closed faced drivers especially if you have a tendancy to hook. Maybe an 11* driver and a 4 wood would work? Good luck, and get a SW in the bag.

Heres some issues i see.

A). dont take the driver out of the bag. If you want a strong 3 wood, go crazy, but it takes out your three wood, not the driver. New clubs dont make a huge difference, its all mental.
B)get a damn sand wedge. Short courses, you will find yourself under 100 yards alot, especially on short, tight courses. In my practice round the other day, i hit two iron off every tee. Missed one fairway.

C) if your carrying a 2 hybrid as a "fall Back" club. Get it out of there. that or the three hybrid, or the three wood. it seems that you dont pull the two, and if your not using it, its not helping you.

D) If you hook the driver, thats all you. Not a clubs fault. Closed faces genrerally only over promote a draw, it sounds like your hitting snap hooks, thats a swing, get a coach, or work harder with him, or get a new one.

E) you say its impossible for you to hit hte ball 240 with the three wood, but thats the distance gap you have it down for.. So why are you still carrying it?

F) you say you want a strong three so that you can hit it 240.. but thats the yardage you have down for your current 15 degree three.. you say you want it to go shorter than a driver, but with a draw.. DONT WORRY ABOUT THE DRAW. no club is going to give you a draw. You can buy draw biased clubs (which i slice the hell out of, i find ironic.) sounds to me that you need to figure out your swing moreso than your equipment needs. Also, dont go convince the pro/mommydaddy. Convince yourself. if you need it, you go get it. Not them. You.

    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
