Who has been watching these? I've been watching a ton because i have been sick and on my couch for the past 4 days. I keep watching the diving because i seriously want one of the divers to do the Triple Lindy(which if pulled off should be automatic Gold). What events are you following and looking forward to?

I wanted to see Trampoline and Table Tennis, but was not able to do so.

I did see the Jamaican break another world record in the 200m running. That guy is amazing.

PS- whats a Triple Lindy?

I've been watching a lot lately. More than any other olympics since I've been alive.

So far I've seen all or most of Michael Phelps making history, men and womens gymnastics, indoor and beach volleyball (men & womens), and track. Some amazing athletes this year. Crazy.

I'm watching too many Olympics. Watching the Walsh/May-Treanor gold medal match right now. Bolt, the sprinter from Jamacia is one bad man. Ah to be 21 and the fastest man ever....

And I saw "Back To School" at the theater. My favorite line..."He don't know dick." I need to get in bed, but this match is too fast paced. It has me pumped up. Also, check Rodney Dangerfield's "The 4th Tenor", no one has seen this but me I think.

If anyone mentions or even hints at Rodney Dangerfield again, this entire thread will go *poof*. Talk about the Olympics or not. Otherwise, start a Rodney thread somewhere, but not in "Sports."

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I've always loved watching the Olympics. My first that I can remember was the '84 ones in L.A. Being from L.A. seeing the Olympics always bring back good memories.

Way too much Beach Volleyball though. Seems like every time I turned it on the first week, voila, Beach stinkin' Volleyball. I'm glad that's over. That trampoline stuff was crazy to watch, those dudes got like 3 person lengths in the air doing those gnarly flips and twists. The gymnastics is out of control too. The floor excersize and rings are my favorites to watch. The power and strength the athletes have to perform those events is pretty unbelievable. Track and field is cool too, I hope the show more of the field events. Some shot put and discuss. There's also a SUPER HOT javelin broad from Paraguay, Leryn Franco I want to see her in action.

I watched the opening ceremony for the first time this year. I'm usually not one fro large scale productions like that, but the Chinese really did it right. The amount of performers they used, and how perfectly choreographed everything was. That was something else with the Thai-Chi routine. Then those dudes with the green outfits that lit up. pretty awesome.

Did anyone see the race walk, that may have been the wierdest thing that i have ever seen. The competitors race 20k and they must have one foot on the ground at all times so they aren't running or they get DQed. I don't know why the IOC would get rid of baseball and softball and keep this.

And why is horse jumping in the olympics? That is the skill of the horse, directed by a human. Really no reason why that should be there.

Half of the "sports" that are in the olympics shouldn't be. Kobe shouldn't be there, he's a professional. Basketball shouldn't be there to start with. TABLE TENNIS IS IN THE OLYMPICS.

the olympics is, supposed, to be amateurs competing in events such as track, swimming, weightlifting, etc. Where you have to be a superior athlete to even compete. You can't compare the athletic ability of the gymnists to the basketball players.

Sports in the olympics like basketball or softball, you dont' HAVE to be a really good athlete to play, swimming or gynastics, if youre not an excellent athlete, youre not gonna do well.

Not only did I watch 2 hours of it, but I have it on my Tivo too. I love when the officials give them a penalty. That Russian chick wooped up on everybody. They were pretty hardcore, they walked in the rain, for a long time. My second favorite event was womens weightlifting.

So why shouldn't table tennis be there? Have you seen Olympic table tennis? It requires massive amounts of hand eye co-ordination and skill. Just because you don't need strength to do it, it doesn't mean the people who compete at the top are not athletes.

They have bmx bicycle as an Olympic sport now, but baseball and softball are gone after this year??? If the definition of "sports" is - something (aerobic) engaged in competitively, with a set of geverning rules, then I guess bmx bikes are ok, but why not competitive eating?

But seriously, why no golf?

I don't think the definition of sport contains aerobic. If it does things like weightlifting and 100m sprint are not sports!

Why would BMX not be ok? Its bike racing, just off road rather than road or track and on a different type of bike. I don't think eating fits the Olympic ideology I also don't think it has a recognised international federation. Its also down to the popularity of a sport. So although baseball may be big in the US and Japan, its not as popular in the rest of the world.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
