Best value used irons

Thread Starter
In search of some used irons for a mid level player. I want something I can have fun with but will still be challenging and that I can grow into.

Problem is I'm trying to go cheap, and pretty much as cheap as possible. I'm always looking out for a good set of tommy armours but I don't think those would be challenging enough for me.

thoughts?

Check used sections at a golfsmith or golfgalaxy.

Why on earth should he be looking for forged clubs?

below is an example of a forged cavity from Titleist:

another forged set from Miura:

I believe that forged irons for under $200 is good value.

For a mid handicap? I disagree on that one. When buying used clubs, I want to see them personally. Try a local store and see what kind of condition they are in.

Re: Best value used irons

I was in a similar boat as you at the beginning of this season. I went around to the local shops, and the pro shops at the courses nearby and checked out the clubs they had. I ended up finding a set of new Ping i5 irons left over from the previous season and the i5s were discontinued this year. I got them for $275 (maybe above your budget...)

I definitely recommend going around and checking clubs out personally since some of the used ones were pretty crappy.

Maybe try Play it Again Sports stores or something similar. This should be a pretty good time of year to buy used clubs (I imagine?)

Good luck,
JR

Unless you buy from a trusted source that has a very accurate rating system like Callaway Preowned online. I've never heard anyone say it came in condition worse than they expected, always better.

I find that their prices are outrageous on used stuff; I'd go with craigslist or eBay. Or Callaway PreOwned -they sell other brands as well.

But the question asked was not where to buy, but what. IMHO, can't go wrong with any of the following:

MacGregor M565
MacGregor M685
Hogan Edge CFT
Hogan Apex Edge
Adams Idea A1
Cobra 3100

All can be found relatively cheaply, the Hogans and MacGregors particularly so as they are not "hot" brands. Check the PGA Value Guide to get an idea of current prices: http://valueguide.pga.com/

Re: Best value used irons

Best value is from Ebay in my opinion. I have bought most of my clubs, bags, shoes on ebay and very satisfied, again great value!

I would check ebay, and your local stores. Can't go wrong with a used set in great condition for under $200. Good luck!

I would have considered the Miura clubs for myself in fact!

Re: Best value used irons

don't forget to know what shaft flex you need. forged iron can be bent to your specification.

Re: Best value used irons

If you want a challenge buy a set like Wilson Staffs or Powerbilts, or Titleist from the 70's. These were the " blades " .

Re: Best value used irons

Try Wilson CI-6 I had set and they are pretty good and can be had cheap now. I did however switch back to Cleveland. Irons are a personal preference so even if they are used ,or new expensive or cheap I really think you will be happier in the long run if you try a few sets out.

Re: Best value used irons

Callaway Pre-Owned.

Lots of selection, good prices, and condition will be better than listed:

http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/default.aspx

For example:

Hogan irons: http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe...oganisets.aspx

You can get a "like new" (which probably means "new") of Apex Edge '06 irons for $238:

http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe...6/2399026.aspx

Or "like new" BH-5 "offset" iron set for $169: http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe...5/2304310.aspx

Or with graphite shafts, "like new" for $99:
http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe...5/2303950.aspx

Or non-offset BH-5 for $149:
http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe...5/2304564.aspx

Anyway, you get the idea. Lots of Hogan sticks available for well under $200. And from what I've heard, "Like New" means still in the plastic.

Hogans are going to have the deepest discounts, but other brands are available: http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/othe.../oemisets.aspx

EDIT: Oh, and with Callaway Pre-Owned, there are no worries about whether the items are fakes, whether you will get robbed, or whether the items are not as described. Products are guaranteed and shipping is cheap.

Dito here. Bought 2 RAC wedges a few years ago and they were definately better than expected. I think they were at my door in 3 days? Maybe think about some steel shafted x12s or x14s.
