65 MPH Swing Speed = Graphite/Senior Shaft?

I have been playing regular steel shafts my whole life. I am now 49 and was at PGA Superstore and after watching me for a while the rep suggested "senior" flex, graphite shafts for me. I averaged 65 mph with a 7 iron with the steel. Is he correct? Should I make the jumpt to graphite/senior or grahite/regular? I normally hit my 7 iron 150 yds w/ the steel/reg.

Stick with the Reg... if its not affecting your performance... dont change it. Personally 65mph iron swing would = around 85 mph driver swing... thats fine for a regular shaft.

Which PGA Superstore were you at?

I would say that 65 mph and 150 yards with a 7 iron is about average for players who should play with regular flex shafts. However, the only way to know the true flex of your shafts is to have them checked on a flex board or frequency machine. There are really no industry standards for shaft flexes. They can also be checked for bend point (high, medium, or low).

If you want to do this, I would suggest going to a custom club maker who does not sell ready made clubs.

There is no advantage to graphite or composite shafts, unless the weight that is saved is added to the clubhead. When extra length clubs are needed, light weight shafts will serve to keep the swingweight down.

I think a 7 iron 150 yards does not warrant a senior flex. I'm 25 but pretty skinny and I only swing about 88-90 mph with driver and I play regular with an occasional tip soft high torque stiff shaft.

Good thing I didnt jump the gun. Went back to another store and decided against the Senior flex. My swing speed was 85 with a driver and 65 with irons. The fitter said I was more than adequate for regular flex. However, I did quite like regular graphite vs regular steel, but not sure if I can afford the extra $200.
