I saw these in the store today and was intrigued. They use some sort of double dimple, meaning a very small dimple within the normal dimples.

Is there anything to this or just marketing?

Top Flite makes the Gamer, Freak, D2 Feel, Distance, and Straight with double dimples. I think the idea behind the double dimples is to improve ball flight, making it higher with less spin on the driver, but I am not 100% positive of this so correct me if I am wrong.

Here's what I play:

Titleist 907 D2 10.5* UST ProForce V2 76-S | Titleist 906F4 18.5* Aldila VS Proto "By You" 80-S | Titleist 585H 21* Aldila VS Proto "By You" 80-S | Titleist ZB 4-PW TTDG S300 | Bob Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can 54.10 | Bob Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can 60.08 | Scotty Cameron Red X5 33" |

Yeah I did gather that's what they were after from the wording on the box. Question is, though, does it work?

Of the newer Top Flite balls, I've only tried the GAMER.....2 months ago.

I noticed the unusual dimple pattern.

I didn't notice any different flight trajectory over some of the older XL's that I was also playing at the time.

I was very impressed with the ball, however.

Held the greens nicely and was sweet off the putter. I'll buy them again.

I tried them. They seemed the same as the normal balls to me. The freak does fly pretty straight off of the tee. Have no idea if it is because of the dimples.

Based on your hcp, your straight shot must have been all you (except for the truck hook in your previous post).

I heard that this ball has no feel - true?

We'll find out today. A friend of mine who works at a proshop brought me a sleeve. I'll give em a shot today. Hard to tell how they react though because my swing is inconsistent.

It just would not hold at all. It reminded me of a lot of the 2 piece distance balls.

I bought a pack a couple weeks ago and have been pretty happy with them. I get pretty good yardage off the tee and they hold well on the greens. The only thing I noticed about them is the soft cover. They get scratched up pretty easily.

About the feel, I would compare them to the NXT. They're not as soft as a Pro V1 but they're not rocks either. Overall I enjoyed them and plan to buy them since I can't dish out $45 a dozen for Pro V1's all the time. Plus $20/dozen is a great price for 3 piece ball. Can't beat that.

I would not put them in the NXT category at all. Much harder cover. I cant believe you were able to scratch these up. With my VOkey wedges that normally tear up everything. They did nothing to these.

I think he was refering to the gamer, which does have a very soft cover, to soft in my opinion which is why I probably wont buy the gamers again.

My bad, I was referring to the Gamer. I figured the Gamer was the only 3 piece ball that Top Flite made. I guess I got ahead of myself :p

I actually did take a chunk out of a freak about a month ago with my cg14. I haven't really done it to too many balls, so when it happened to that I was really surprised just because distance balls really don't have the same tendency to shred as do premium balls (based on what I've read, I normally don't keep a ball long enough to do that much damage to it )

Hey guys. I have used the BIG BERTHA red mostly, blue sometimes for years and have been very happy with them. However, I tried out the FREAK and love it. The FREAK seems to hit straighter and farther than any ball that I have ever used. It bites the green pretty good for a distance ball and with a little practice, I am putting very well with it.
Check out TOPFLITE.COM to see some hilarious commercials about the FREAK.
The FREAK is my new FREAKING ball, as they say.

Yeah the freak is a good ball . I forgot to mention in my last post- about a month ago the local sports authority had a sale on these golf balls. I think it was something like 5 dollars a dozen (they were sold in the two ball trial packs). I ended up buying 4 or 5 dozen for under 30 dollars.

  • 3 years later...

I have been using FREAKS for 2 years they seem to have added about 20 yards to my sticks, my golf buddys tell me it's all in my head cause my swing is better. My last thought before i hit is "hit it like it's a freak" wheather it in my head or the ball who cares....the ball has pretty good feel around the greens for a distance ball and comes off the putter nicely. It's all I'll use but 've always been a "FREAK" anyhow so it works for me Happy Hitting

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
