I have Taylor Made r7's and my PW is 45 degree and I got a 50 Vokey to fill the gap, now I want to replace my Ping Eye 2 SW with a Vokey. Looking at 56 degree and wanted to get feedback on the spin milled versus regular vokey design -- pros and cons?

Thanks.

I would go with the spin milled, for one reason alone... longevity

at first the spin can be annoying, its really sharp off the floor but over time they wear down and essentially become a standard wedge so if you went with the standard version I believe you would have less play out of the wedge over the long run

Thanks. I need that spin

Right now on shots 100 and in I'm hitting close to the flag or past a few yards and it hops and keeps rolling to 20 feet past - so instead of a birdie putt I'm lagging for a par. Spin is what I need! Thanks.

then the spin milled sounds right, pair that up with a nice quality 3 piece ball and pick yourself up a groove sharpener for occasional wedge maintenance and you are golden!

Why? Pitch your shots 20 feet short of the pin and you'll have tap in birdie puts all day. Your greens might not allow that much spin. Your ball is fine, but the Vokey SM doesn't suddenly make you spin the ball back. There are plenty of posts on this site about producing backspin. It's about technique more than equipment. If you get a56 SM and use it in bunkers it will wear into a normal wedge very fast.

I disagree. While it is technique that puts spin on the ball, using a spin milled wedge with a soft ball will work. Maybe he struggles with taking 80% swings rather than full swings. A wedge and a softer ball might help that. And I have used my 54 degree and my 60 degree in bunkers for almost a year now, and they still look and play great.

3 piece balls offer more spin around the greens.

Maybe in very general terms but it depends entirely on the ball....for instance look at Bridgestone:

  • E6+ is a low spin 3 peice ball
  • E5+ is a high spin 2 piece
I'm looking at getting some new irons in a few months and feel like replacing the wedges first. I'm going with Spin Milled if I go with Vokeys. Why?.....because I'll take all the spin I can get....especially from the rough. Also, because they want be easy to find in the future.

Getting spin out of the rough is, well, rough. Ball needs to be sitting up nicely so when you strike downwards you impart the spin, without grass between the grooves and ball.

Sm Vokey's are very nice, had a 54 before i replaced it with my mizzy. All the new wedges spin the ball crazy. It's not always the equipment, my buddy can stop a NXT Tour dead in it's track on a full sandwedge at 100yds with his $29.99 Pinemeadows 56. Sure, not as much spin as a SM, which would prolly spin back 10ft with a V1, but just goes to prove that technique will also stop the ball with whatever you are using.

To spin the ball back, say on a front pin location, 5-10+ft spin, I focus on a downward blow on the back of the ball. Steeper angle of attack.
To stop the ball where it lands, back pin location, 1-3ft of spin, I do more of a sweeping swing. Shallower angle of attack.
Obviously, the better the ball and wedges, the better the results.

But, to answer your question, you can't go wrong with a SM.

If you have the option of the spin mill, why not just take it. you've nothing to lose. As mentioned elsewhere, once the grooves wear down a bit and it doesn't shread balls anymore, you'll luv these wedges. Erik reviewed the wedge and said he'd take it into a bunker and hit 50 balls to "break" the SM wedge in. That sounds like a great idea and you'd get some practice in, while acclimatising with the SM wedge.

Are the Titleist wedges better than the Cleveland wedges?

I was out looking for new wedges today, the Vokey & the CG 14 are the same price ... not sure what's better.

It's all preference. Titleist and Cleveland are the more popular brands for wedges. Again, it comes down to what you like but I think more people would choose Titleist.

Ya tonyy, the guys at golfsmith told me it's a personal preference and that the Vokeys spin more. I have read alot in the forum that says the Vokeys chew up balls. But because of that, the club's grooves probably last a bit longer than other clubs?

So, do I take a club that ruins balls & lasts longer (Vokey), or a club that doesn't ruin balls but might not spin as much (Cleveland)?

I have a 7 Year old set of Callaway X-14 Pro Series and can still generate spin with the 54deg sand wedge.

I also have a 60deg Vokey Spin Milled wedge - that generates a hell of alot more spin.

It's a combination of technique and equipment. Get the technique and the equipment right and you'll be whippin' the ball off the front of green with ease.

I have the spin milled, but I don't know how much of a difference it would make for me if I stepped down.

The vokey's dont offer the type of feel of the club that I like, they feel very firm, or even dull sometimes. Our grass is very thin, so that might have an affect on it, but my old nike SW felt a lot softer. Just my opinion

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
