I have reconfigured my set up to have only 3 wedges - PW, GW (52.10) and a 58-deg wedge that will be used as both a sand and lob wedge. What would be an ideal bounce angle for such dual usage?

I was thinking of 12-deg which would be ideal for sand but perhaps not for the lob. On the other hand an 8-deg is more useful for a lob but perhaps too little for sand. Should I settle in the middle with a 10-degree? This limits what I can buy as the Vokey comes in 58.08 and 58.12, while the TM Rac Z TP is only available in 58.08. The Cleveland CG14 has a 58.10 and 58.12. Any suggestions pls?

Try the Callaway X-Forged, and get the 58* with the C-Grind. It has 10* of bounce, and the C-Grind makes the wedge more versatile, as you can open it and hit a flop, or close it and hit a chip.

Here's what I play:

My 60 has 10 degrees of loft, this imo (unless you play very firm/soft surfaces) is the best 'in between' option as it allows you to open the club face without the fear of thinning the ball and allows you to hit effective splash shots out of bunkers.

Obviously though it depends on the conditions you regularly play; if your course is usually hard and firm then a wedge with something like 6 degrees of bounce would be ideal, playing on a soft/wet course and you would be looking at 12 + degrees of bounce.

I assume you meant 10 degrees of bounce.

I suppose I'd suggest going with the best bounce for the bunkers you normally play -- the fluffier the sand, the more bounce you need to keep the club from digging in. Unless you play *really* tight, firm courses it's probably easier to get away with a bit of extra bounce in the fairway than not enough in the sand.

<$.02>I would also suggest keeping your 56 in the bag and adding an additional, lower-bounce lob wedge... for mid- to high-handicappers like us, I think that simplifying the execution of shots under 100 yards or so is one of the best equipment decisions to help lower scores. IMHO, the difference between a 5 wood and 21 deg. hybrid doesn't outweigh the benefits of narrower gaps between clubs and more straight-forward options around the green

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've gone out and bought the CG14 58.12 afterall. This is to keep the wedge "set" consistent. I opted for the higher bounce to give me more options from the sand and will learn to use the bounce effectively elsewhere (am doing a second read of Stan Utley's the Art of the Short Game, where he uses 1 wedge for all shots inside 80 yds).

smlxl, I had already sold the Mizzi MP-T 56.10 to my cousin, so it wasn't a viable option but is a very good suggestion. Tks.

58* with 10-12* of bounce. Also, bounce and effective bounce are two different things. i.e.; take a vokey 60*/4* and a vokey 58*/12* and open up the faces. The wide sole on the 60* makes it play with more effective bounce.

Ummmmm.... I don't know what your talking about

Edit, yes your right I meant 10 degrees of bounce, it is too late to slyly edit that post, fail for me.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
