I was playing in a 12-man blitz on Labor Day (09/01/08) and got my first hole-in-one. The guy that built my clubs was part of the blitz and, unknown to me, contacted the manufacturer of my clubs. I thought it was neat to receive a handwritten note from the president of the company and a "hole-in-one club" golf hat.

Most of the guys I play golf with are older than 50. They said when they got theirs, they would sometimes receive sleeves of balls or a gift from the club (like a putter). Has anyone received this type of stuff?

Details:

Hole 5 at Heron Ridge Golf Club. Par 3, white tees, 133 yards. Pitching Wedge. $121 bar tab.

The only gifts that I have heard about for hole in one's are in company outings and such. I saw that you said you had a $121 bar tab afterwards. I never could figure out why the person who got the hole in one is supposed to buy the drinks. I would think it should be the other way around.

I geuss if you count a pat on the back I got a present... The club pro at the course took my name and what club I used then a few days later I saw it listed as a blurb in the "other" column in the sports section, as little as that was I thought it was pretty cool the pro did that. I also got a certified hole in one certificate from the VSGA, to get that you have to fill out the form and have 2 witnesses sign it as well as the pro at the course and mail it in. Someday I plan on getting a shadow box to display the scorecard, ball and certificate.

I always thought of the buying of the drinks for everyone as a "sharing the good fortune" kind of thing.

Edit: Congrats!!! Welcome to the club.

In some amateur-tournaments there is sometimes a car as hole-in-one price by the sponsors. Unecessary to say, its not on the easiest par3.

    • Watched the whole season of Fallout. Loved it. It's got some warts but they absolutely nailed the feel of the universe. The best series I've watched since The Last of Us.
    • This topic can be whatever you'd like it to be. If you're working with an instructor, you may have to mention it occasionally, but people will respect that and you can use this as a diary of sorts.
    • Look at Kevin trying to rationalize his small minority vote. 😄
    • It's all good, man. I appreciate the discussion.   The hole slopes right, towards the penalty area. That's the part just past the cart path that isn't mowed. You can land a ball on the fairway that ends up in it if the ground is firm enough.  Everything that's brown in the satellite image isn't rough. It's fescue, which even during this time of year is tall enough that just finding a ball in it can be hard. Bunkers might as have red stakes around them - I read that in a book, once. So having set that table, here's what the shot cone looks like if I try to play for what you're suggesting: I just don't see that as the optimal play. I need to get out of there with no worse than 5, not try to make 3 and end up with 6 or more. It's a short hole and my strength is in my iron play. I'm actually oddly not much better from 50-100 yards than I am from 100-150 yards. It's like a 4% difference in green success rate and 8' closer in proximity. I don't see that as worth putting trouble into play off the tee for.
