I'm a 15 handicap and can pretty much count on shooting mid to high 80's. If I shoot 90+ I consider it a bad day. I played this morning as part of my normal group. I'm not big on warming up so I only spent a few minutes on the range. I hit 3 or 4 pitching wedges, ditto for 8 and 4 irons. All pure. I hit 3 drivers all down the middle. Then off to the first tee.

I proceeded to hit my drive right, into the trees, and under a shrub...double bogey. On number 2 I drove to the left rough, hit 8 iron 10 yards right of the green...bogey. On three (a dogleg right par 5) I hit a good drive then topped a 3 wood. No problem...just a 7 iron to the green. Shanked it OB for an 8.

Three or four crummy shoots on number 4...double. Parred the next hole a par 3.

To make this long story short I shanked two more mid irons and ended up shooting 52. I felt "disconnected" and out of sync through the entire front 9. I thanked my playing partners for their patience and companionship and skipped the back nine. I'd taken enough punishment. Now I feel guilty about bailing out. Do I need new clubs?

Yes I have, I have been in a slump for the past week and a half, I haven't broke 80 in that span. Like I will shoot a 37 or 38 on the front and shoot like 43 or 44 on the back. And is not quite like yours, I will just have 2 or 3 holes where something goes wrong.

Do I need new clubs?

I had one of those today. Went down to the range a couple of days ago and was hitting the driver dead straight with about a 250yrd carry....

Down at the course I hooked my tee shot off the 1st losing it, then proceeded to hook pretty much everything off the tee unless I sat the ball in the middle of my stance and opened up the club face a bit. Yuk.

4 pars
3 fairways hit
2 GIR (!!!)
8 over handicap.
Rubbish.

You will have brighter days ahead, but you should have finished the back nine. Its always a challenge to try to find you swing when it disappear during a round, beside you had your chance to ask yourself after the front nine if you still love this game called golf.

don't feel too bad. I played in a match yesterday and was doing pretty well for myself. I had one par, two bogeys, two doubles, and two triples, which is fine for me, BUT i had 2 ELEVENS! We played on a course that had a lot of water and i managed to avoid it all but 2 holes where i went in 3 times each hole. Say i got two doubles on those holes(A par 4 and 5), that would have been a 52. I would have been just fine with that as my average is 55.

I've gone into a complete golf slump. I was shooting high 40's low 50's for nine before golf season at my HS. This was my first year playing golf in high school and in general. As soon as the season started I just started choking left and right. Don't know what it is but i can't get a round under 60 and idk what to do.

Had one of those rounds (back nine, though) a couple of sundays ago. Haven't touched a club since. Playing in an outing on 9/21 and might not play prior to that.

When the wheels come completely off the cart, the only thing that cures the ills is a couple of weeks off. I'll do some practicing prior to the upcoming event and maybe sneak in a 9-hole round, but that's IT!

Happens at least once, sometimes twice a season. It's enough to make me say things like, 'damn, have you EVER swung a club before?!!!'

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

The new clubs part was a joke. The rest is sad and true.

I sensed some sarcasm, but thank you for clearing that up. I was really going to question you as a person and a ball striker.

In my league, I've come to know this course very well. I typically will shot mid low 40's. Two weeks ago I got on a bad run, I had a bad day at work, and shot a 51. It happens.

My son sez... "Dad, it's not the arrows, it's the Indian!"

I can relate to your range experience. In fact, I think many golfers would say that they have had days when they "smoke" the range only to burn-out on the course. The range is not the course...

You had a typical golfer's brain fart! You thought that, by virtue of the success on the range, you would translate range to course and it didn't work. Then your brain got to thinking and... you know what happens when golfers get to thinking????? One bad swing leads to another and the score adds up and after nine, it's time to stop the mental & physical abuse.

Take a break; but, get back on the horse. It happens to everyone!

Cheers!

i slumped for the past 4 weeks and yesterday was the 1st day that I hit the ball well in all aspects from tee to the green. the driver was money again. no more duck hooks. draws and the fade came back.
get it out of your head. i felt disconnected from the shot that i was gonna play for weeks. as a 15 you should know what's going on with your swing and how to correct it.

you should understand enough of the game to say, i can fix this..and come back stronger. i slumped for 4 weeks and when i got my game back yesterday..and my confidence, i added 5 more yards on each club..and it felt great.

it's the swing..not the club!

Last year I played in a club tournament the day after attending the Indy 500. Fighting a MAJOR hangover, I stumbled onto the range and tried to find my swing. It took about a half-bucket, but I finally got to the point where I could swing without feeling like I was going to throw up. We get to the first tee, and a guy in my group (also hungover) gets up and whiffs. On his second swing he pops it high and left into a lake. I went to tee up after him, and I had only one thought in my mind that I hadn't had since I was 9 years old, "Don't whiff". I truly scrambled on the first seven holes, 2 putts for par from 18 feet or more and a chip in for birdie.
Finally, the events from the day before caught up with me. I got the shanks Tin Cup style. I would address the ball with absolutely no clue as to what would happen. It got so bad that a member of my foursome said, "Why don't you get out and walk for a few holes?" Nice guy.
From that day on I vowed to just stay in bed the day after a serious bender.

At least you have 2/3 holes were something goes wrong. With me, right now, IF I MISS A SHOT I HAVE A GRANTED DOUBLE BOGEY!

If I miss the green, and have a easy up and down, I can make a not-so-good bogey. Yesterday, I went out and even on uphill lies, my ball would nearly go in the hole, looks like it will stop, and actually only stops about 5 feet after. And that pisses me of because I know I'm doing everything right. I had my coach to check ou everything in my putting stroke/short game and he says that it isn't bad, needs a tiny bit of practice (it always needs more practice). I'm starting to think that for some reason, I need to play on faster greens (at my club they usually ruan at a 9/9.5)

Yeah, I had one of those days today as a matter of fact

Got to the course and realized I left my glove and green repair tool (always keep it in my pocket when I play) at home ... said "'F' it, I'll play without them."
*a little discombobulated*

Got paired up with 3 other guys and found out they wanted to play the tips today (par 36 - 36.2/127) and I am used to playing the whites ...
*a little more discombobulated*

first hole missed a 10 footer for bird ... missed the come-backer and eneded up with a bogey ..
*Danger Will Robinson, Danger!*

Teed off on the second hole 524 yd. par 5 -- Sliced the hell out of the ball and it ended up sailing over the fence and bounded down the adjacent runway ... ended up with an 8 on that hole ...
*self-destruct sequence initiated ... *

Par 3 3rd .... stuck the tee shot to within 10 feet and missed that birdie putt ...
*BOOM!*

That was it for me, checked out mentally and physically ... ended up shooting 51 on a course that I usually score in the low 40's ...

UUUGH!

    • I always get adds for "Find your Eastern European Soulmate" I think it's a nifty gadget to have at home. If your going to do a dedicated putting session I could see setting it up. Thanks for sharing.
    • Here's the bet. Assuming the pursuit of a Tour card holds, who wins their first Tour event? Charlie, or this Russell kid? Bet is off if Miles Russell signs with LIV.
    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
