I'm thinking about checking out the pros this weekend at the Nissan Open. I've never visited a tournament, any tips on how the get the most out of my visit? (Besides turning off cellphone and not taking pictures during Tiger's swing)

Visit during the practice days. Get your autographs, pictures, etc. then.

Also scout out where you'd like to sit during the rounds. Find two places, on holes 5 and 15 or so. Sit at hole 5 for awhile (or whatever "early" hole you choose). Watch half or more of the field come through. Pick a group you like and follow them to your second ("late") hole. Drop them and watch the rest of the field. Follow one of the last groups to 18 and then go to your car.

I'll be there on Friday.

To really get the most out of the tournament I'd recommend volunteering to the event. It's too late this year, but if you go to pgatour.com, then click on the tournament's page there will be a link for volunteer info. I'm not doing it this year, but the two years prior I was a standard bearer. You get assigned a group and you hold the sign that tells all the spectators who is in the group, and what score they are at. If you are lucky, you can work with some big names, and walk right up close with them for the entire round.

If that's not your style. A friend and I used to do this. Get yourself a beachchair, and show up at the 18th green around 7a.m. and stick it down right behind the ropes in the ideal spot. Then you just go spend your day walking around the course watching whomever you'd like. Towards the end of the day go back to find your chairs at the 18th and watch all the action. Now, we were young kids when we did this, and it was about 15 years ago. Dunno how people these days would react to this though. You might not find your chairs when you get back.

Wow, both tips sound awesome. Unfortunately I can only go on saturday or sunday. I will definitely try the follow/drop technique.

Can one bring water and/or food to these tournaments?

I was checking out the regulations. Cameras only during practice rounds. No backpacks over 6 square inches. No cell phones. I'm pretty suer you can bring your own food?! Don't see why not. I'll be sneaking my camera in.

So I went today (saturday) and had an absolute blast. First thing I did was buying a sweet Riviera umbrella, cuz it was raining like crazy. But as soon I opened it, so did the skies, and it was nothing but sunshine all day. I burned my head!

Originally I was gonna follow Tiger starting on the 10th and then pick up Fred Couples halfway. Unfortunately Tiger was too sick to play, so I followed Freddy the entire round. He was playing with Kevin Southerland and Nick Watney. Kevin has a very very slow start on his swing, which was a bit odd to watch.

Freddy is so much fun to watch, the way he acts on the course is awesome, always walking with his hands in his pocket, totally chillin. The gallery grew bigger and bigger the day continued and in the end I had to "fight" for a spot to watch. So stoked to see Freddy play so well, not only cuz he's the coolest dude on the course, but also cuz I picked him for my Best Ball Foursome .

The one thing that I picked up from seeing these players live, is how they go through their pre-shot routine, it's always the same for each shot. I totally gotta get my own.

Awesome. I can't wait to attend my first PGA event. Not much happens up here in the Seattle area, for obvious reasons. At any rate, your post was a fun read.

Freddy is very fun to watch. I was watching him on tv and if you saw what I saw then you got to see some preety good shots. I wish I could follow freddy! Sounds like you had fun.

Man, you got on TV. That's awesome! That's what spectating is all about. If you can't get yourself into a magazine, you gotta get yourself on TV. I totally forget to try and get myself into pictures. One year my boss got himself in GOLF magazine. Cool deal.
