Where did it come from?

Yesterday I hit the longest drive of my almost 2 years playing golf.
I had become accustomed to hitting in the 220-240 range with 250 being a perfect drive. I just said to myself that since I dislocated my shoulder in an accident prior to golf, I just couldn't get that much power into the ball. Adding to that that I am about 140 lbs 5'8, so not much mass here.

Well yesterday I played 9 and on the tee of the 9 I coil back and hit, BOOM, hit the sweetspot nicely. I was very happy as this is a 415 yard par 4 in which without a good drive there is no way of hitting the green.

I walk towards the FW and find my ball about 134 yds from the green, making this a 281 yard drive. Take into account there was no wind, probably even a bit against me. Since it was getting dark I didn't get a chance to try and replicate it, but it is great to know that I have 280 yard drives in me somewhere.

Now I need to know where to look.

Do you guys have similar stories and things I could look into to hit this nice drive down the middle?

I had one a few weeks ago. I usually hit it around 260-270yrds but on the short 16th at the course where I've started playing I just let it rip. The hole is 305yrds off the whites and it was in the rough off the back of the green.

No cart path, no wind, as far as I could see no animal picked it up and dropped it. I'd like to know how I achieved it!

I've been noticing a similar phenomenon at the driving range lately. I've been warming up with my 8 iron at the beginning of my practice sessions. I hit my 8 about 150, usually. I hit my 7 in the 160-165 range, my 6 in the 170-175 range, and when I really connect with the 5, more like 180-185.

Maybe once in every 20 8-iron shots, I hit the 8 about 180. 30 yards longer than an average hit with good contact, and about as long as my 5! I can't for the life of me imagine where that freak shot comes from, but if I'm hitting the 8 iron really well, 6 consecutive shots, all with good contact, might look like: 150, 155, 145, 180, 150, 155.

What happened on the 180-yd shot? What does it mean?

Golf psychologists would tell you that is a moment where your real potential shines through. You get out of your own way, maybe without realizing it, and great things happen.

Store the memory and the feel of that shot. Use it every time you go to hit a ball. You'll start seeing more of them.

I usually slice my drives pretty badly on the course - but yesterday i hit one flush that just felt PERFECT and took off real hot and straight. I KNEW it was going to be a good one, but I didn't have any idea how good - well we just got pounded by rain for 3 days straight here in northern indiana, and the fairway was so wet all my drives lodged straight into the ground and then popped out about 6 inches backwards. Well this particular drive happened to have 280 yards of CARRY... I was ecstatic, and just thought "Why can't I do that every time!" I have NO IDEA what kind of roll I would have gotten though. It was cool seeing how far each of my drives carried yesterday though because of the rain (Most between 220 and 260 - the low ones had too much sidespin on them)
