this year my local muni is FINALLY pumping back 5 million into the course for improvements that have been needed for..well since the course opened to the public after being bought from 1 of the private clubs in the area.

the course will be pushed back from 6550 to just about 6900. more traps, water, new tee boxes making players have to work the ball with draws and fades to avoid trouble....
new drainage, grass and all that...

do any of you know how quick they send someone out from the usga to re-evaluate the course difficulty?

The USGA doesn't rate the courses. The regional golf association does using the USGA formula. All course must be rated once every 10 years, but if major changes are made then it gets re-rated. The course just needs to contact the regional golf association to get on the rating schedule.

You are correct, it was the regional assoc. And after just calling my club, they said that exact thing. That it just took them a while to get them to come out. (6 months).

Old thread, But in Australia(not sure about USA) the ACR(Australian Course Rating) is not really used but instead the CCR(Adjusted ACR by the results of players from that day) is used. This way conditions etc. is taken into consideration when calculating handicaps. If this is already known to you, I apologize, my bad.

Funny you mention this but I played a course this past weekend that I had a free pass to. Not bad but nothing special. So I notice on the scorecard that there's no rating or slope. So I ask the guy at the desk and he says they can't afford to spend the $15K to get the course's rating and slope. The course claims to have been around since 1916. That's the first time I've ever come across that. Can't say that I'll be back.

I never thought of that. I know a few guys that have a links style home course located on high ground(ie wind has almost always been a factor when I played there). They then come and play tourneys on courses that are located in a valley and tree lined(with similar slope and ratings to their links course)... and usually play below their handicap by quite a few strokes(and kick butt).

We always thaught they were sand baggers... perhaps it's just the more difficult conditions they are used to...(ie wind, and lots of it)
