I am in the market for a stand/carry bag for my son. He does carry and also rides sometimes. He is just starting out in golf and is using a 10 year old bag that is heavier than today's bags and does not have a stand so I do think this is a "must have" for him (as much as anything is for a 15 yo!!) With my various credit card rewards I can get him any one of the bags listed below. Do any of these stand out? Any of these to absolutely avoid? Thanks in advance.

Ping® Freestyle Stand Bag

Nike® Xtreme Sport II Stand Bag

Callaway® Golf XTT Xtra-Lite Stand Bag

Callaway Golf Warbird Hot Stand Golf Bag

Ogio Edge Stand Bag

I have the Nike Extreme Sport I bag and I usually ride in a cart and the bottom of the bag is too big to fit into the bottom of the cart properly and is a big pain in the neck because it then leans way sideways and is annoying as heck.

I have heard of a few of them, but only have experience with the Ogio product, which IMHO, is a great bag. Lightweight, versatile, and with a stand.

Don't know if it matters, but I chose a non-club Mfg bag just in case I switch clubs - didn't want a Mizuno bag if someday I buy Titleist irons.

Overall, Ogio makes a great overall bag. Go to a local store, and have your son check them out - he'll have to live with his selection - and at 15, you shouldn't have to put up with his grief if you don't choose the "right" one.

Good luck.

I had a Callaway Daytripper standbag I got a few years ago that was I believe made by Ogio, like this one but in grey/graphite.

I was really impressed with it but after about 8yrs (three of which were it being in a garage never seeing the light of day) it needed replacing and I got a Matrix standbag (I think, well that's what I put in my signature!) from Costco, for I think $80 last month. I do like the bag but the straps feel pretty flimsy and could wear out very quickly. It was pretty much an impulse buy, and looking back I probably should have done a bit more research. Nevermind!
With my various credit card rewards I can get him any one of the bags listed below.

Thanks! I just took a look at the Amex MR website and realise I can use some of my MR points to get a Vokey wedge...and still have enough for a small fleet of Scotty Camerons*! I've had them building up for ages and never bothered using them for anything. Superb!

*Too bad only the Red X series are available.

I am always in search of the perfect bag and I have looked at a few of those bags.

I liked the Nike, it's simple, solid, and light. A loose copy of the PING Hoofer. However, it is sorely lacking in dividers. (It has a divider top, but only a couple of full length dividers. What's the point?) The Ogio Edge is a fine bag, although maybe a tad heavy for a 15 year old, unless he's a bigger kid. Ogio legs aren't the best. They don't pop out far enough, and don't detract well. But the Woode club management system is why I own an Ogio Vaporlite. The Warbird Hot XTT has a fantastic leg system, and it uses a divider system that is the mirror image of the Ogio Woode. However, the straps aren't quite as nice. And it feels heavier than the 5 lb listed weight. The XTT Xtra-Lite Stand Bag has the good leg system, but an ordinary divider system. It also feels heavier than the listed 4 lbs, but is still lightweight. I haven't looked closely at the PING Freestyle. The Hoofer is the model I would recommend. Light, bombproof, and time tested. But it doesn't look like it's on your list.

I would suggest the Ping Freestyle, they are light, the stand is great, and had lots of pockets and room, it is overall a great bag IMO.

Here's what I play:

Most often I walk, but I do ride when playing one of those twilight all you can play deals.
Couldn't be happier with my Ogio Grom. It has a rubber strap on the back that locks it solid to a cart. You don't even need the carts strap when its on. Not sure if the egde has it, but its a feature I really like.

I don't care for the divider system as my grips seem to snag each other when I try to pull a club out. Other than that, I really love my Xtra-lite bag. Doesn't hurt that the Costco's in my area have them for about $85.

That Ogio bag is great, but I believe that it is their heaviest, biggest stand bag. If he will be carrying very much, try to get the Ozone or Vaporlite. Among the one you listed the Nike is very popular.

Thanks all, you guys are very helpful. The other bag that now comes up on one of the catalogs I can order from is the Titleist X77. This bag does not have any reviews online or here but I think I read that these are made by Sun Mountain.

The bags listed on my list - now including the X77 - are the only ones I can get from these catalogs so, while the suggestions outside of the list are interesting - I cannot substitute.

Thanks again for all the good input - and I will take him to preview these as much as is possible. (The bag will be a holiday gift!)

Ping® Freestyle Stand Bag

Paul,

I remembered your post this morning after my practice, so I took another look at each of these bags before I left the pro shop. Here are my additional thoughts on each of the 5 bags you can get for free.
  • PING Freestyle Stand Bag
    • Lighter than I remembered. Felt about the same as the Nike and the Callaway Xtra-Lite.
    • Best legs of any of the bags - set it down with a little force and the legs fly out to a stable position. Lift the bag up, and the legs pop in fast and sturdy. The "bend" in the legs helps stability.
    • Only 2 full-length dividers (same as the Nike and Callaway Xtra Lite - on the two horizontal dividers. The vertical divider is completely open below the top of the bag.)
    • The carry straps were just okay.
  • Nike Xtreme Sport II Stand Bag
    • Light. About the same as the PING and the Callaway Xtra Lite.
    • The legs were only mediocre. Better than some, but not as good as the PING's.
    • Carry straps were good, but they are connected. IF you want to carry over one shoulder, you have to undo the quick-release buckle securing the second strap to the connector. Not a problem, just worth mentioning.
    • Only 2 full length dividers (see description above for the PING Freesyle.)
  • Callaway Golf XTT Xtra-Lite Stand Bag
    • Light.
    • Good stand system - not as "springy" as the PING, but deployment and retraction were stable and solid.
    • Only 2 full length dividers (see description of PING above.)
  • Callaway Golf Warbird Hot Stand Golf Bag
    • Heavier than the 3 preceding bags.
    • Uses a "club management system" similar to the Ogio.
    • Better full-length dividers than the "light" bags.
  • Ogio Edge Stand Bag
    • Heavier than the other bags.
    • Uses the Woode club management system with lots of dividers.
    • The legs are meh. (Ogio's weakness on most of their stand bags.)
    • Lots of little "gadgets" like tee holders, ball holders, zipperless pocket, etc.
All 5 of the bags appear to be well-made. It comes down to personal preference, but if I were choosing a bag for a 15 year old who will be primarily walking, I would go with the PING, Nike, or Callaway Xtra Lite. Of those, I like the Nike and the PING the best, with the PING winning by a nose. Hope this helps. EDIT: Noticed that you just added the Titleist x77. That is last year's model, but that isn't a concern at all. The x77 is made by Sun mountain and is a solid bag. Good legs and stand system, good dividers, and well-made. But it is a bit heavier than the Nike, PING, and Callaway Xtra-Lite.

The ping is probably the smallest, lightest, easiest to carry bag. I'm not sure that it has a lot of space for clubs, but it should work great. Ping makes the best bags ever... I have a hoofer vantage, and I love it.

OK, it is down to 2.

Nike Xtreme Sport II Stand Bag or the Titleist X77. We checked out these and the other bags at GolfSmith and he really only liked the Titelist (they only had the lighter version in stock, the X86 which I guess is similar but smaller??) and the Nike, primarily because of the strap system.

The Titleist bag seems a bit better made and - IMHO - "looks" nicer. Hopefully I can find an X87 for him to preview against the Nike to see if the extra weight is a deciding factor. Otherwise, I think he liked the Titleist a little better.

Please feel free to share any additional thoughts and thanks again for the solid advise. I am sure he will be happy either way.

OK -Done!

Paul, I think he'll be happy with that bag. (Of course, if he's like every other golfer on this forum, he'll spot a new one that he wants . . . well, in about 30 seconds!) I'm not positive, but I think a slightly modified version of that bag is the one that Nike supplies to the college teams that it partners with - sort of Nike's version of the venerable PING Hoofer.

Very nice summary Harry. It's people like you that I enjoy coming to forums.

Thanks. I'm just a semi-gearhear who tries to help when I can.

And bags are a particular interest of mine, because I don't think anyone has designed the perfect bag yet.

I broke off one of the legs on my stand bag and I'd like to find a replacement. I ride, but I'd like to have an inexpensive stand bag just in case and to use at the range. Golfsmith is having a 20% off sale, so I thought this might be a good time.

They've got a Callaway Mini Looper for $70 and then 20% off of that.

There were a couple of others under $100. Nike Xtreme Sport Carry II, Tour Trek Sahara.

Or something else I might check out in that price range?

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
