As my wife was again buggin' me about how much I play golf (like it will make me stop ) I looked back at some threads like this about how wives or significant others try to dictate how much golf we play. Mine gets in moods and complains every so often but realizes quickly that it isn't going to get me to stop.

So what about you, do you cave to the Mrs. or play anyway. Or better yet do you have the secret to marital bliss even with a busy golf schedule? Please share.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

well, i have a 2 month old baby so I'm on lockdown. I can only play on weekdays if its for work. That happens once every few months. Needless to say, I see my handicap rising.

I sometimes try to get out on weekends, but just need to prepare myself for the wrath when I get home. Sometimes its just not worth it so i go to the range instead. Especially out here in cali where it can take up to 6 hrs to finish a round.

I dont want to derail your tread... but this is perfect timing for this topic! My brother calls me on wednesday and says he found another tournament for us to enter (4 man scramble, love em). Only downside, I find out its on October 4th, my wedding anniversary.

I tell him it its really doubtful, but I'll see how it goes. Suddenly I find myself stuck in a sitcom. What would Raymond do? He would try and go, and wind up in the dog house, thats what. So I tell my bro to forget it, im not going.

I bring it up to my wife last night, as kind of a funny "guess what day it was" kinda thing. She tells me to go! I say, are you sure, I thought you would be upset. She says "it wont take all day, just go".

So now I ask the group.... is this a "trap". Is it a no win for me? Would you go?

Ahhh women, gotta love them.

Chubber, go for it, just make sure you have something good lined up that night. To be safe, send her to the spa in the morning while you play golf. My anniversary is the same day, 5 years now. We are actually baby-sitting my two nephews on our anniversary so her sister can go to a wedding. Imagine if I said we had to watch my brothers' kids on our anniversary!! Anyway, I'm playing golf while her mom comes over and helps. We're going away the next weekend to leaf peep.

She is cool with me playing almost as much as I want, as long as I spend equal time doing something 'fun' with her. But then again, we don't have kids yet, and I am sure that will change when we do.

Well, I have a two girls (7 and 3) and I get to play about twice a month now. I'm surprised I've been able to bring my handicap down at all this year.

That said, I've played tournament level softball for the past 15 years including tournaments every weekend and going away to a couple National tournaments every year ... up until a couple years ago. So, I guess I really can't complain.

Now that the girls are getting a bit older and softball is waning, my plan is to play much more. And here is the part of the plan I'm banking on ...

I figure if I can join a private club which is incredibly cost-prohbitive here in New England, she'll let me play more (without b*tching at me) because she'll want it to be worth the money. Well, a guy can hope, right?

I guess I just got lucky, when I picked up golf 4 years ago, my wife wanted to try it, so I bought her a set of clubs. She instantly was hooked, mostly due to the fact she was pretty good at it right away (she is a tremendous athelete), and she loves it, so I don't have the problem of making her understand how addictive it is, lol....

I don't know how it'll be in the future considering my wife thinks I'll get tired of the game sooner or later (I'm not sure she realizes just how addictive this game is), but since I got hooked a year ago I've had absolutely no problem playing or practicing when I want for as long as I want (99% of the time).

My wife and I play golf together a lot. And, this year at least, she has encouraged me to go out with the guys so I don't have to worry about her on the course. I think next year I'll still be able to golf a lot, but I'm thinking she's going to want to play more next year as well (as much improvement as I saw in her game this year, her first, I think she'll be shooting low 90s consistently next year). So I guess I never have to cave to her about playing, since she doesn't complain about how much I play. At least not yet!

I guess a lot of it has to do with age and the age of your kids.
Bothe my wife and I are 55yrs old. When the kids left the house I convinced her to take lessons. She became addicted. We both shoot lower 90's or upper 80's si it is usually close and competitive. On Saturday I may play with the guys and she plays with her friends . On Sundays or if I have a day off during the week we play together. If I go on a business trip or we go visit friends out of state we look for courses to play. It has been great for our marriage............................except when I want to go out and play a round with her and she prefers to go with the ladies she plays with.

When my kids were home it would have been difficult or impossible to do.

The only negative thing about both playing is the cost. I wish resorts and courses would have golf specials for couples.

Yeah, I notice that too! It now costs twice as much to play as it used to. BUT - - - you get to play more!

Gotta have your priorities.

My wife doesn't like to play that often, even though she has her own clubs and is pretty decent. Still, she goes with me almost every time I go.

We get a sitter for our two small kids and she walks along with me. She will even pace off yardage markers, rake bunkers, carry my bag about 1/3 - 1/2 of the course, and if I'm having a bad game she will even...umm...nm

A good woman should be committed to seeing her husbands handicap drop.

For me, there's a lot more to life than golf. When I was younger, I played high school & college golf, and experience a lot of success. After I got married and started having children, golf became a lot less important to me. It's definitely not as high as priority as it use to be. I remember thinking that I would really miss not getting to play as much as I thought I should play. But as time has passed, I've realized what I would have missed if I would have demanded to have my own way.

Now I'm not a perfect husband or father, but I realize that I've been blessed. And I know I only have this time with my wife & children. I remember my dad use to play once or twice a week, and was always playing on the weekend. He was a scratch golfer, so in a lot of people's eyes, he was justified. But in reality, he never had a very good relationship with my mom or his children. I believe when he died, he regretted making some of the choices that he made. I know I don't want to make that same mistake. I'm not trying to preach, but just sharing my own experience.

Golf is my "alone time," and a lot of those times, my wife is glad to see me go. (g)

I'm not playing very much right now for financial and time reasons (I cover college football for a Web site when it's in season as part of my job, so weekends are basically out from September to December), so it has never been a problem.

I bowl more than I golf, and when my wife and I were dating, I got her to join a bowling league and got her some lessons. Now, it's simultaneously the best and worst of times. Ninety percent of the time, I like having her there, but when she's not bowling well, she tends to take it out on me, her primary "coach." So I'm not rushing to bring her into my golfing world, in other words.

We have a rule in my household. I can play anytime during the week, and can play weekends as long as I am done by 1pm. I dont play weekends much anyway, so it works out perfectly.

I tee off at 6:30 Sunday morning and am back for lunch and the afternoon matinee with the kids, who are usually still in p.j.'s (as is my wife on occasion) when I come storming home at 11:30. We've reached a detante -- I golf when I want, and in exchange don't complain when she buys anything. Not being wholly inconsiderate, however, I try to juggle life into a balance; for example, I golfed this morning while my wife flew to LA and my mom watched the kids, then I took the kids to movie night at school, tomorrow I will merely watch golf on tv, then Sunday I'm playing in the morning, Monday playing in a best-ball event, and Tuesday have a lesson on ye olde floppe shot. The rest of the week is for work and family (apart from the hour or so chipping in the backyard).

I don't think my wife has ever complained about me playing golf. I usually play 2 or 3 times a week. We do have a 3 year old, but on weekends I'll go out early like 6am, and I'll be done before there ready to really do anything anyways. Catching late twilight golf weekdays when wifey isn't working helps too I guess. I really am lucky though, my wife is very supportive of golf or anything else I like to do.

My girlfriend works late daily, office manager for a doctor's office, and I teach Chemistry. So, I can have 9 holes in usually before she gets off work. On weekends, me and my friends hit the course early, and she gets to sleep in. After golf, we usually go back to someone's house, for a cookout.

Seems to be a win-win for me.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
