i played a round on the weekend and i shot 80 (10 over) and decided afterwards to see how i did:

fairways hit: 57%
average drive: 215 yards
scrambling: 50%
GIRs: 22%
putts per GIR: 2.25
total putts: 30

based on this info, what do you think i would need to improve on the most? thanks for any help in advance.

i had a look on golf digest which shows fairways hit and distance

anthony kim 60%/302yards
tour average 63%/286yards
scratch 64%/260yards
10 handicap 50%/225yards
20 handicap 43%/190yards

mine was 57%/215yards which is about right for distance and very good for accuracy, although i do not feel i hit it far enough (can get 230-240, but the drives around 200-220 happen more often so bring the average down)

GIRs: tiger woods 71%
tour average 62%
scratch 61%
10 handicap 39%
20 handicap 22%

mine was 22% so this is poor for a 14 handicap, although i feel this is due to my poor driving distance rather than poor iron play because with more distance, i would be hitting shorter irons into the greens and it would be much easier to hit more GIRs

scrambling: harrington 61%
tour average 56%
scratch 52%
10 handicap 32%
20 handicap 21%

mine was 50% so this is very good for a 14 handicap

Hey donkba,

It's got to be your irons with a GIR of 22%. I would guess you've been like this for a while since your scrambling is 50% which I think is pretty good. Your putts per GIR of 2.25 coupled with your putts per round of 30 (which is less than two per hole because of your good scrambling) tells me that even when you do hit a GIR, your not close to the hole.

So I would definitely say you should work on your iron approach shot. Which is my issue as well except my scrambling is not as good as yours.

BTW, what's your % of GIR on Par 3's? That's always a good indicator.

I don't mean to be rude here.. but isn't it obvious? Your lowest percentage is your GIR's which is the most crucial to the game if you want to shoot low.

Hi, firstly well done on a pretty good round! In my opinion, like the above replies your GIR stat is definitely low!

Like you mentioned, I would definitely say that your driving distance is the main reason why you are missing the greens!

Any thoughts on how you could improve your distance off the tee?

I would also like to add that while you work on long irons, and distance to also work on lag putting, because you average over 2 putts per GIR. While this shows you aren't close to the hole when you hit a green, but if you can get that first putt close and can tap in for par, you will see your score drop as well.

btw i forgot to mention i only have 6 clubs. driver, 6i, 8i, 9i, 64 degree and a putter ( i have anger issues) and this was probably why my GIR stat was so low. i have never broken 80 but have hit several 80s this year. I 3 putted the 18th for a bogey and an 80 and also bogeyed the two easiest holes on the course, the first and the tenth. on the first (350yards), i hit my drive into the trees so had no option but to chip out and got bogey, and the tenth (265 yards) i landed in the fairway bunker and had 60 yards to the green so used my 9 iron (no sw or pw and 64 wont get there) and thinned it off the back of the green. i also had relatively easy putts on 16 and 17, one about 6ft the other about 4 ft both for birdie and missed them, so, had everything gone right, i may have shot a 75, but once again, i could not break 80. what more do i have to do? (besides getting a full set of clubs!)

I would say your GIR and your driving. If you improve your driving distance, I think your GIR would also go up considerably.

try an experiment and practice your short game 50% and putting 30% of your practice time for the next 2 weeks and this shall lower your handicap and improve your stats.

Probably? With 215 off the tee I don't think you'll be able to reach many par-4's in two without woods, hybrids or long irons. You're covered for 215, ~150, ~130, ~120 and ~50 (estimate based on your driver distance). There's a ~70 yard gap in your long approach and, even worse, a 70y gap in your short approach.

Find out how many times you cannot reach the green because you don't have the 220-150 range clubs. Then find out how many times you have to half-shoot your 9I because you don't have longer wedges. You could use these percentages to figure out your potential. Obviously you should not assume you'd hit every 190y shot on the green, but you get the picture.
