Compliment your golf buddies and watch them fall apart.
Here is the scenario. I have a friend that I play with that we screw with all the time and he STILL has not figured it out. He gets ready to come up to the tee. He takes a couple nasty..out of sync swings that are destined to be bad and the rest of the group starts saying "Golfie" type comments such as
a.) "Boy Walt, you have a beautiful swing"
b.) With that nice of swing you must generate a lot of power! No wonder you drive the ball so well!"
c.) Hey Rick...watch Walt. He has a beautiful swing. He knocks the snail snot out of his ball! Watch him...he's good!"
d.) "Walt...let me ask for your advice! How do you generate so much swing speed?"
e.) Hey guys..watch Walt! If you want to see how to swing smoothly...check him out! He really..really good!

Now for your info...Walt has a horrible, stiff. un-orthodox swing that would have any golfer laughing. HE however does NOT realize this. So when we compliment him either to his face or behind him as he is taking practice shots, he tenses up to prove to the rest of the group that he is indeed a golf god. Needless to say...he shanks one, slices another...duffs this one and chunks that one. We have to let up on him after 2-3 holes. Our conscious won't let us go any further.

Yeah that sounds like a lot of fun. And Walt continues golfing with you guys? If you don't want him to have fun with you guys, why do you take him? More importantly, why doesn't he find some better friends to go golfing with?

Boy...you sound like a blast to play a round with!

We have all know each other for 15 years!! Like brothers...and brothers mess with each other. None of us are exempt! Let me explain the game a little more simplistic for you...the game can be serious...no room for joking around...a lot like we are playing for the Tour Championship where we walk around like we are pros..(which we are not) all tight as--d and serious...OR...we can have fun with each other, joke around at each others expense, and laugh our heads off! (no alcohol required). I'll take the second choice ALL DAY LONG! I love the game, my friends and our fun together! This is not elementary school or high school where punks are teasing each other for spite...this is a grown up way of boys being boys!

It didn't sound like no one was exempt. It sounded like it was a pick on Walt Free-for-all. You didn't mention anyone but Walt being picked on. I won't even post my reply on your "simplistic" comment. So, if really no one is exempt from getting razzed, then sure, it's fine. I obviously didn't get that from your original post. Sorry.

Ditto. I can raz (and be razzed) on occasion as well, but after someone makes a shot - and usually a good one, not a poor one. Those tend to be greeted with the proper, respectful silence.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I once asked a buddy of mine if he blinked during his swing, sent him to pieces for about 3 holes.
When I play with my Father after he nails a great drive, 270 meters (295 yards) I'll ask him why he did'nt hit driver, and how I am looking forward to drinking the beer he buys me
and that's about the worst of it.

I play golf by myself once every week or so. I usually go off early in the morning and play 9 either as a single or sometimes with people I don't know. When I do go off as a true single, I often find the game more frustrating. My friends razzing me keeps the game light hearted and keeps my mind off the bad shots, and forces me to remember the good ones. I played a round as a single (practice round) a few weeks back, and being an empty course and I had to get to work after playing, I chose to ride, well Riding as a single gets frustrating, because after a bad shot you don't have a chance to cooldown before you get to your next shot and a bad shot turns into a bad hole and before I knew it I was cussing, and at one point I think I banged my iron off the ground.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I don't get it!

Myself as well. I'll take a poke here and there at a good friend who leaves a putt 6 feet short or something else that we both know they could do better. But, I would never pick on someone who has a swing flaw they are unaware of in an attempt to make them hit a bad shot.

If you guys are all that close and everyone sees a problem with his swing that he doesn't know about, why don't you try to help him correct it?

Golf.....to me....is too fleeting of an issue to be razzing about with someone. I don't want to add to any reason they may have to mishit a shot be it real or imagined.

That being said, I have overstepped my bounds in the past on two known occasions and I still regret doing so.

Situation 1: Playing with a buddy, Mark at Farmville CC in Farmville, NC. He was a good guy but got a little too deep in his thoughts about golf and life in general....brooding....contemplating.....yet failing to see the obvious sometimes. Anyway, he was telling me about some new hand position he was trying and hoping for sucess on our round. At some point on the first or second tee-box I asked him if he inhaled on his backswing or follow-through. He shrugged his shoulders and we continued playing and talking about various other stuff. As I recall, he didn't have a very good round at all. On one of the final holes, he said that he inhaled on his takeaway. Mark had been bouncing this around in his head the entire miserably played round.

Situation 2: I was playing in a foursome at Rocky Branch GC in Lincolnton, GA. We had several groups playing and numerous bets going on...many of us were crossed up in a couple bets each....not high stakes, mind you, just a few bucks here and there to make the post round beers in the clubhouse more interesting.
The fourth hole there is a very, very short par 4. Due to the woods on the right and water on the long left I never hit more than 6 iron off the tee. A guy in our group, Bill....another serious type had been trying to cream his driver on the first par 4s. He was getting a bit fumed at the results. The other 3 of us were grinning at each other at his antics. Bill was strutting around and huffing and puffing after his dismal driving. Anyway, Bill decides that even though the rest of us are teein off on No. 4 with mid irons, he is the exception and is going to drive the green (would require a well struck ball that faded at the end). We hit and waited on him. He began his backswing and I farted extremely loud. I could see my partners heads drop down in attempt to laugh outloud. To his credit, Bill nailed the drive.....long and straight as an arrow. Unfortunately for him.....straight is no good and leaves you in the water.
We finished out the hole quietly and one of the guys called out for everyones scores....we rang 'em off to him. He asked, "How 'bout you, Bill?". Bill replied, "A @

Sounds like your a hell of a friend. Don't try to help him or anything, just keep telling him his swing is great. He'll keep doing what he's doing, scratching his head wondering what's wrong and why he can't hit it when his swing is good. I'm guessing he gets real frustrated after the third hole, and that's why you let up. Some friend. I'm all for joking around on the golf course, but it sounds like your contributing to his bad game.

I accept your apology

So was I. Your two posts sure didn't sound like you were kidding. Why didn't you say you were "kidding" in your second post instead of trying to (unsuccessfully) justify your first post while at the same time jump all over me. If someone acted like the way you described it would be the last time I played with them. Some kidding around is OK but what you described is assinine.

Alright gentlemen....lets start this again. All of my buddies have been just that...for years and years. We are out there to have fun. We are serious...but in a light-hearted way. See gentlemen...most of my friends are thick skinned men. They have strong personalities that are not easily offended. If any of you are exempt from any funny behavior..or razzing your friends...then bless your little hearts. Us guys work at a pretty stressful occupation and we have a blast with each other. Believe me..there are those warm, fuzzy moments when we give each other hugs...but when we go golfing, we have a stress free day at each others expense...and we KNOW we do. That is why we have fun! A lot of funny things being thrown around on the course. Now...if I was playing with a serious, performance driven golfer which I have done in company tournaments, I don't dare say a word to them other than "Great shot" or the derivative of that. At Sawgrass in Pontre Vedre beach in Florida, we have a yearly tournament and some of the guys you get paired up with walk around like they are pro golfers with absolutely NO...ZERO...ZILCH humor. That game sucks! I want to play well just like everyone else...but you gotta have fun and enjoy the guys you are with. Friends joke around with each other in case you have not noticed. Many of you are getting your tidy whiteys in a bunch and acting all serious. C'mon...even the poster that said he let out a fart as the guy was driving laughed a lot...but had to follow it up with,"He was having marital problems". Now..in my opinion...that was funny! It was!!! It would have been even funnier if he said that he soiled his britches while doing so. I don't drink guys..not a drop, but I see guys getting loaded on the course having a great time and playing great golf. THAT is what the game is all about! Practice on the range...not the course. That is where I'll give tips. It sucks when you are playing a game and somebody wants to give you all the reasons why you suck at the game. We all do that at the range when we practice. That is when we get serious.

I figure if you and your buddies are having fun, no harm. If I slice one into the unknown, I expect shit from my buddies. If I short-stroke a putt, I know I am going to hear about it. And my buddies know I will heap it on them, too.

MY buddies and I golf because it is fun, and we golf together because we all have fun. I guess when it isn't fun any more, I will find something else to do.

JMHO on levity,

Steve

If the story would stay the same it might be OK but it sure has changed since the original post:

Compliment your golf buddies and watch them fall apart.

Above is the "Pick-on-Walt-Free-for-All post.

Boy...you sound like a blast to play a round with!

The above is version number two. We all do it to each other, and it's just "messing around," not doing all we can to make Walt screw up the first few holes before we have to stop because it messes him up so bad.

I accept your apology!! By the way...I was kidding!! GOTCHA!

This is where he says he made it all up and they really don't mess with Walt. Or is he saying he made up the second post? I'm not sure.

All of my buddies have been just that...for years and years.

Here is another version altogether. They are just having fun out there, stress-free day at each others expense? I bet Walt's getting a little stressed from hitting bad shots the first few holes before you guys have to stop because your conscious tells you it's time to let up. You want to play well? I guess Walt doesn't? Help him out, oh friend of Walt. Or do you want to make sure you guys beat at least one person and Walt's the lucky guy? You know, at the end when you guys are kidding around, "At least I didn't finish LAST, huh Walt?" There's a difference between joking around and messing up a person's game. Which is what you said you guys do, for the first few holes anyway. Oh but you were KIDDING! You really don't do that, or do you? I am not sure which story is the true one any more.

We joke around with each other when we play too but if we see something one of us are doing wrong we'll mention it. Not if it's someone we got paired up with but with one of your buddies for the last 30 odd years. Having fun and poking fun and good natured razzing is one thing. Going over the line is another.

If the story would stay the same it might be OK but it sure has changed since the original post:

Well..well..well..! I re-read all my posts on the issue. They all seem to have the same theme...but you may twist it any way you like. The way we raz Walt...is not the way everyone else gets razzed. Each guy has their own niche in getting razzed! Walt is a tad bit egotistical...so we find the method we use to be highly effective. They find a way to screw around with me as well. Did I mention that we were thick skinned??? Ya know...I am not going to explain to the "Post Police" over and over. If you would like to make a comment...do so. I did not ask for an account of my horrible methods of teasing a friend. We have fun. Did you hear that??? We have fun! We are ALL great friends!! The kidding doesn't hamper that! None of us are exempt from the verbiage that gets thrown about. I was just sharing a little bit of what we do to Walt! If you were thin skinned as I can see you are...and that's OK....I understand....not everybody can handle joking around, we would not say a word to you. We all know the limitations and we abide by them. Obviously..if you were in our foursome...which I highly doubt that you would be...we would very quickly understand that you are very sensitive and take your game seriously as we all do...but in a different atmosphere. We would play nicely for 9 holes and somewhere around the 9th hole when it's time for a soda and hot dog... we would skip the 10th hole and go to the 11th when you were going to the bathroom so that you wouldn't find us! Hey Smalltown...thanks for playin' along. I anxiously await your "panties in a wad" comment.

I know that there are many..many golfers out there that understand EXACTLY what I am saying and understand fully. I've read a few already. Please save me the aggravation and go lecture someone else about their behavior. Maybe you can go get on a post about whether to allow a "Mulligan" in a friendly game...or "Penalty strokes for lifting and cleaning". That sounds like your forte! I apologize for my unfriendly response...but I have a feeling that I don't like you for some reason. Horrible..since I've never met you.

So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
