I picked up this tip from a friend of mine who plays mini-tours and is a former club pro.

One of the biggest problems with high handicap players is they are inconsistent on where on the club face they are striking the ball. Take a Permament Marker with a Fine Tip on one end, you can pick this up at Office Depot, and color in the 5th groove from the bottom on your 7 iron. (It doesnt affect your club, but if you want you can do this to an older club.) Then, when you address the ball, it gives you the correct spot you should be aiming at the apex(center) of the golf ball. After practicing this for a while, you will be more consistent on striking the ball on the correct spot on the club face.

Interesting idea.

I've done the "talcum powder" approach. It's very suprising once you start seeing exactly where you are contacting the ball.

Gross as it sounds, spit works wonders. At the range when I'm practicing, I'll put a lil spit on the club face, on both irons and driver, and wipe it clean/dry.
Not only will it show you exactly where you are hitting on the clubface for 10 shots, it also shows the compression on the driver face.

The black face on my Superquad shows me exactly where I'v hit every tee shot.

good ideas. ive also found that if my wedge is clean i can check it after a chip and see where i made contact based on the grass. this gets kind of tedious cleaning the club after every 2-3 or shots.

I clean every club after each shot, don't see the problem there. Especially my wedges, I usually take a divot with them, I have to clean off the dirt and grass so it's ready for next time.

my buddy draws a little smiley face on his ball with a water based marker and when he uses his driver (or woods), the smiley face gets transferred onto the club face. works well. you can clearly see if you hit high,low,toe, heel.

That is like my friend. He Puts a Checkmark with a circle around it and faces it at the club. It is a really good indicator to help with consistency.

I have marked all my range balls with a line around them, and i line this up with the target when i'm practising. When you hit the ball it leaves a mark on the face. Its really good to tell you were you're hitting the ball.

The original post was suggesting an "aiming technique" rather than an evaluation (where did the ball hit the clubface) technique. But along the evaluation technique lines, a roll of masking tape is a very cheap substitute for impact tape. Just put a piece on your clubface and it is easy to see where the ball hit the clubface.

      Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.

      Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group.       I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
