Hey folks,

So I've been working on my swing lately (mostly iron shots) and have been trying to create the divot the pro's make so I can have better contact. My good shots usually are picked up clean off the grass, or worse, pick up a little turf just before the ball.

I've focused on hitting down and working on my lag to give me the power and supposed better swing arc that bottoms out at the right place. However, I usually end up with one of two shots:

1) If I focus on hitting down, I usually hit the shot fat, several inches behind the ball (of which I usually place just left of center for most of my irons).

2) If I focus on lagging in my downswing, which removes all chance of a fat shot, I generally tend to hit my shot very thin, probably cuz I'm not releasing my wrists at the right time. And when I do make decent contact w/ a lagged downswing, it's the same product, picking the ball up cleanly.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Could it be that your spine angle isn't fixed? If it changes during your backswing or downswing you'll manipulate it and it can give you everything from a fat shot, perfect shot to a thin shot. That's at least something I'm struggling with and I have seen that my spine angle is not fixed. I have a tendency to over-rotate and dip at the start of the downswing.

Could be straightening the back knee, getting the arms stuck behind, ball position, weight shift, over extension or probably a combination of several things. I am at a loss to suggest which one not having seen your swing.

You not getting your weight on your front leg prior to impact. Hit some shots with all your weight on the front foot ( take the rear foot back a bit and balance on the toe) and you will feel solid impact with a descending blow and the proper divot which follows. Hitting down on the ball is really bad golf advice, as its not the problem, but only the result of a poor weight transfer back and forward resulting in impacts with too much weight on the rear foot. Work more on a coiled body turn back so the weight can get on the front foot prior to impact. And as stated above stay in your spine angle through impact.

Try focusing on having a straight left wrist at impact instead of trying to hold the lag, trying consciously to hold lag can be disastrous, straight wrist at impact is holding lag.

Hey folks,

I would focus on making consistent solid contact and forget the lag of the swing until you are making solid contact consistently.

Solid contact visualize a circle and the bottom of the circle is where you make solid contact. Anytime you move away from the circle on your backswing this will cause you to hit behind the ball or hit the ball thin. Solid base If you watch the pros they take the club within the circle and never move away or sway their base is always solid, their weight is on the inside of the back foot and they make a nice turn to maximize power. Glove under arm like Vijay and other pros practice Try this and it might help, practice your golf swing with a glove under your arm pit and swing so that the glove does not fall out, this will help keep your swing connected to your body and make a compact swing and this will help you make consistent solid contact with your irons, fairway woods and driver so that you can hit more greens and score lower.

Wow this is all great info. I want to thank everyone who's posted. I'll definitely give these things a try.

I do know that I tend to sometimes straighten my back knee to allow for more hip turn on the upswing. From some of the video of my swing I know my spine angle is relatively good. And I'll work w/ different ball position, maybe right at center.
