As some of you may have read on previous posts, I got a Tei3 Newport 2 last week. This past weekend, I took it out to Baker National to give it a much anticipated trial run. And... I putted terrible. I think I had four 3-putts in a roll, seven total for the round. By far one of the worst rounds I've shot in a while. Main problem? I could not judge distance at all. Couldn't get the feel of the putter head. I only figured out why after the round that it was all in the grip. My previous Ping G5 Anser had a stiffer grip, and I have this squishy Winn grip on the SC. So soft that I was squeezing the heck out of it! Even though that they both have the same style head (Newport is just a knock-off Anser), putting is all about feel. Feel is mainly due to contact point with the club, ie: grip.

Moral of the story? When choosing new putters, make sure to consider the proper grip, not just the head shape, shaft, loft, and lie. I don't think I'm going to cut off this grip quite yet, it's actually teaching me to hold the putter lighter in my hand. In the long run, it'll be worth it. I've putted a couple of times at the range after the round, and it's working out much better.

Ya the grip has a lot to do with the feel of the putter imo. I have a really old putter that has a very hard grip that I have to grip pretty tight so it doesn't slip out of my hands although I don't think I have lost feel because of it. I have used 2 other putters that have soft Winn grips on them and thought I lost more feel with them because I had to grip it even tighter to because it just didn't feel right.

I bought a Redwood Anser a month ago and I thought that it would be the best thing for me. It has a smaller, harder grip...yet I couldn't hit it straight if I tried! I then switched grips to one of those fat Winn putter grips and THAT did nothing. I changed my stance...I changed positions....I was ready to just assume that my putting went south for the summer. I was given a mallet Cobra putter that was face balanced and "ding-ding!", the putts became much more accurate. I found out through a very expensive lesson, that my putting style was best suited for a face weighted putter. That is why I bought the Ping Craze I putter. I didn't know that there was that much difference. I'm glad that i read your post..cuz' I was thing that switching to a fatter squishier grip would help me with the putts. I actually never considered the feel....as dumb as that sounds. Thanks for saving me more anguish.

Tools of my game:

Sounds like my SC story.
Wanted a Newport for awhile and came across a Studio Select Newport 2 for a good (great) price and picked it up. It replaced a 14 year old Ping Anser that was getting beat up pretty good and wasn't the prettiest to look at but it could make some putts. I hadn't three putt in 2 months, maybe 12 rounds.
Played the first time with little practice and pushed and pulled EVERYTHING.
5 three putts that round, so bad I stopped keeping score.
Next outing went back to the old standby, the league course I play at least once a week and know pretty damn well, putts starting falling!!
I still had 2 or 3 three putts but I had 5 one putts, four of them for birdies!

I will continue to use the putter, practice a ton over the winter on the floors of the house, and retire the Ping after I attempt to do a semi-restore on it this winter.

I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one. It's a great putter no less, just some time getting used to it...
