I was reading a new book that I bought today called; A DISORDERLY COMPENDIUM OF GOLF. It is really good. I was shocked to see some of the facts and stats, especially this; the record for the most professional wins is not NICKLAUS OR PALMER. It is KATHRYNNE WHITWORTH. Then the highest winning man is SAM SNEAD. It says that nobody was closer than NICKLAUS until TIGER and ANNIKA came along. There is a chart with wins and ANNIKA and TIGER as of 2006 when the book was published. The authors go on and compare ANNIKA vs. TIGER, in 24 different categories. ANNIKA wins 13,TIGER wins 8 and they tie in 3 categories. So with this information who is the best?

This is apples, oranges, and pears... and with the selections, nothing to vote on... IMHO! Sorry Sabertooth... it is disorderly.

What's the question again ?

Yeah, I'm a bit confused too. Although Kathy Whitworth is the overall winningest golfer of modern times, Babe Didrikson Zaharias might actually have been the better player. She didn't even start playing golf until she was in her 20's, and her career was cut short by illness. She won 17 straight women's amateur titles, and 82 total amateur and professional tournaments. In 1954 she actually won the US Women's Open just one month after surgery for colon cancer. She managed to win 2 LPGA tournaments in 1955 after her cancer returned, and passed away at the young age of 45. But she was more than just a golfer, as a track and field star, she won 2 golds and one silver medal in the 1932 summer Olympics (at that time women were only allowed to enter a maximum of 3 events). She was a star baseball and softball player, and an AAU basketball champion. So that book needs to be researched better, and your poll really is far too selective.

The question is who is statistically the best player? The book shows these four as being the best professional players ever statistically. Everyone is always asking who's the best JACK or TIGER? However, technically JACK is not in the top four pros.
Thanks for the information on BABE, she was a great player maybe the greatest. Players like her and BOBBY JONES may have been the best ever, but they were amateurs, I believe, and the book is just showing pros.

Babe played as both an amateur and a pro. And as far as I'm concerned you can't compare players who played in different eras, with different equipment, against different competition, even the courses themselves were far different then than now. There is simply no common ground for weighing them against each other.

It's long been known that statistics can be manipulated to say what an author wants them to say. Most authorities point to one stat as being most significant, and that is performance in major tournaments, because that is where the best players play their best golf against the strongest competition, and under the most pressure. Sneed did ok in that regard, but Jack still holds the top spot (with 18 wins and 73 top 10 finishes in majors), and will continue to do so for years yet to come. They are (or were) all great players, each with different strengths and weaknesses. I don't get why any one of them has to be declared the winner for all time.

You make a good point, and after thinking about it, I agree with you.

    • This is pretty much how I look at it.  I understand there are times when the piece of mind has value. I think over the long haul I'm money ahead by never buying the extended warrantee. Hell, What do I know? I went to Ch!cago PubIic SchooIs.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
