Yawn! Whatever toasts your buns. If you're playing it's probably OK. It's like baseball... I played as a kid and can't stand to sit an watch it now. I'd rather play golf or watching lawn bowling.

Don't get me wrong... I've seen some stellar games in England, Australia, India... just didn't wet the whistle. Good luck!

When I was in Hong Kong on business, I went out for a few with an Irish colleague, and we watched a few Cricket matches on TV. I never really took the time to pay attention before then, and it did look interesting (especially watching it with someone who played the game for several years). It actually started to make sense.

If you are successful in finding some Boston-area cricket leagues geared toward the novice, would you please PM me?

I've really only played sports that rely heavily on hand eye coord

baseball, golf, hockey... shouldnt be to hard to pick the game up, not saying I'm going to be an all star but I should be able to knock that ball around

Cricket IMO was invented to pass the time between the pub closing at 2pm on a Sunday and opening again at 7pm.After being chucked out of the pub the villagers would assemble on the green and play the rather slow paced game (mainly because they were half drunk). Those who had drunk a little more than they should have were designated as fielders where they could stand motionless for hours on end attempting to stay awake. The more lively would either bat or bowl to entertain the women folk while they were not making the tea.Elderly gentleman were of course allowed to sleep in the deckchairs, incontinent bags optional.
Sadly cricket as we know it in its origional form has ceased to excist with the advent of all day opening of the public house. The mounting tension of the game as it draws to its conclusion at exactly 6.58 pm will never be repeated.

I jest Ye not, origional rules of cricket...........

You have two sides, one in and one out
Each man thats in the side thats in goes out,and when hes out the next man comes in till hes out.

When they are all out the side thats out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get the side comming in ,out.

Sometimes you will get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to be in the men who are out try to get him out and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out to be in.

The umpires stay out all the time and they decide who is in and who is out. When both sides have been in and out and have been out after all the men have been in,including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Anyone for cricket?

I played it and learned it in grade 6 gym class, it is a really fun game to play, and actually hitting the ball is amazing.

It's hard to learn at first but then gets really fun, its a really great game.

Well I have to get up at 6:15 am tomorrow morning to start at 7:50 and finish around 12 with 60 overs. Then on Sunday morning, I have to do all the same again. I bowl leg-spin and open bat. We are playing a team with the state under 17's opening bowler in their side. I am already shitting bricks. For those who follow cricket, my district club Scarborough has produced many good cricketers including Justin Langer.

Played for 15 years from the age of 5 until this season - which I'm actually foregoing to play golf on Saturdays instead! Absolutely love the game and I'm sure I'll miss it terribly (actually, seeing this topic has made me miss playing and the season hasn't even started yet I think :P).

Cricket is a great game but it's a bit like your American football and baseball in the respect that only once you understand it properly and have played it to appreciate the skill involved can you really start to appreciate and love the game. I can see how a five day long draw can seem absurd to many Americans who can't end any professional sporting contest in a draw, but you really need to "get it" to get it if that makes any sense.

It's quite a bit like golf too. One of those character building games that is all about self discipline and playing with integrity (I know other sports are like that too but you won't see an all in brawl in cricket I can tell you that). Just because you've got good hand eye coordination don't expect to be good at cricket though, like golf It takes a lot of practice and time developing a solid technique to be able to excel. Then again, it can still be great fun with a good bunch of guys who are just out to have a go. My suggestion would be find a club that has a social aimed team so you can learn the game and enjoy a few beers with some good mates while you're at it. Just work on the brownie points with the wife for when you start sitting down in front of the TV all day to watch a test match instead of doing work around the house!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Day 3- Practiced putting for 20 minutes.
    • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
    • 43 (6 over) Couple bogies, couple Pars, a birdie and no doubles. Not bad for first 9 of the year.
    • Most the stuff I found on Instagram and just copy and mix it up. a few of my favorites: Clean>Squat>Press> March Around the body >catch >Squat> press I also hold a the kettle bell upside down with both hands on the handle. Squat when I stand back up I lift the kettlebell up over and behind my head and hold then repeat
