  1. 1. Which two clubs should I buy next?

    • 3-wood, 5-wood
      3
    • 3-wood, hybrid
      16
    • 3- or 4-wood, 60* wedge

After two months of jumping through red tape to circumvent the credit freeze, I finally received my student loan reimbursement last week. Since I had already spent several hundred dollars out of pocket for books, supplies, and other expenses, I decided I'd take out a small part of my funds to upgrade by golfing arsenal. (I know: we're in hard economic times, and I'm tossing cash around on sporting goods. I'm sorry, but I couldn't help it.)

Over the course of this week, I've purchased a new driver and a pre-owned set of forged cavity-back irons (3-PW, plus a gap and sand wedge) in excellent condition. I don't really care about buying a new putter right now, so I could buy two more clubs to round out by bag. My question is, what two clubs should they be? Obviously, a fairway wood is in store, but I'm on the fence over whether the other should be another fairway wood, a hybrid, or a lob wedge. Can I get some advice?

So far, the people who have voted in the poll have been split between adding a hybrid or lob wedge in addition to a fairway wood, while no one has responded in favor of two fairway woods. For the people who have responded or will respond to the pole, could you please post a reply elaborating on your choice for me? It would help a lot. Thanks!

It depends. How well can you hit a 3 or 4 iron? I can't hit them very well that's why I love having my hybrids.

like the above poster said it all depends on your game. For some reason I can't hit a fairway wood to save my life. Seriously, I can't hit them at all! For that reason I currently carry two Hybrids. I also have a lob wedge in there.

I'd recommend a hybrid unless you hit your 3 iron well. I'm a 14 handicap and play two hybrids because I'm inconsistent with long irons.

Also, many higher handicaps have an easier time hitting a 4 wood off the deck than a 3 wood.

I wouldn't recommend a 60 degree lob wedge over a fairway wood and/or hybrid....your sand wedge will work just fine for shots around the green.

3 wood and 60 for sure. a 60 is a scoring club and i would rather have a club that i could stick to 10 or less feet most of the time than a club that would put me 5-10 yards further down on par 5's cuz thats pretty much the only situation i use my hybrid if i don't hit 3 wood

For those who wanted more information from me, here it is. My iron play is solid up to a 4-iron, and I can even hit a 3-iron well more than half the time. My two biggest weaknesses are poor accuracy off the tee and an inconsistency from within 100 yards. I simply waste too many shots around the green, and that's most likely the one thing that keeps me from being at least a bogey golfer.

As for what's in my bag, I finally have a respectable enough set to advertise in my signature, which you can hopefully now see underneath this post. I don't have any particular brands that I am partial to: I purchased the Ben Hogans separately, and I just happened to get two good deals from the same label.

at a mid-high handicapper... I wouldn't recommend a 60-degree sand wedge... (in fact I'm a +4 and I don't play one... ) I would recommend something like a 15 degree fariway (3-wood) and like an 19-degree hybrid or so... don't get a 2 hybrid because most of the time they are like a four-wood on steroids... especially if you buy like an Adams or Callaway... my suggestion is a 3-wood and a 3-hybrid... because the 3-hybrid will act more like a five-wood than a 3-iron

While I don't know about the four-wood on steroids, I do agree with the recommendation of a 3 wood and 3 hybrid. Personally, I don't even have the three wood yet and sometimes wonder if I really need it. I know that there is a certain gap to my length between the driver and the 3 hybrid, the question is just: when is that actually relevant. So far I seem to be able to get there in regulation (length wise). If I miss - which is more often than I like - it's not due to lack of club-power

So, if you're on a budget get the 3 hybrid only and the wood later. Distance-wise you might already be covered for what the hybrid can deliver, but I'd say it's helpful to have this slightly easier club at hand when you need it.

I'm an advocate of more wedges for use around the greens. How many times do you face a shot in between your 4-wood and 3-iron distance? How often would having an extra wedge help? That's what it comes down to for me.

That's the reason I took out my 3 wood and opted for the 50* wedge. My distance between the 15* 3 wood and 18* 3 wood was only about 15-10 yards at most. The 50* in between my 46* PW and 54* SW was worth it in my scoring. I made this switch only 5 rounds ago and I have seen the results already.

I recommended a 3 wood and 60 degree wedge.

1. I think wedge play is important, and you'll do more to help your game be becomming deadly with your wedges than anything else.

2. This leaves you time to think about your next option. You can take time to learn to hit your 3 and 4 iron. You can buy a hybrid that falls between a 5-wood and 3-iron in distance and keep your 4 iron, buy a 5 wood and replace your 3 & 4 with a single hybrid, or buy two hybrids that repalce the 5 wood, 3 iron, and 4 iron.

Having some gaps between your long clubs isn't the end of the world. Having gaps in your short clubs is a bigger deal that should be eliminated.

lack of confidence around the green is a stroke killer. i could never get my SW to do like i wanted it to around the green so i got the 60* and i can stick them close usually.

i encounter more need for shot making around the green than with a hybrid

Well, I appreciate everybody's feedback in this thread; it appears that people were about evenly split between a 60-degree wedge and a hybrid. Weighing all the opinions, I have decided to the wood-and-wedge route. A hybrid will be on my wish list in the future, but right now, I need to more help with short approach shots than I do with long irons.

(1) Adams Ovation 16* 4 wood or Adams Insight BUL 15* 3 wood.
(2) Ben Hogan CFT #3 hybrid 21* .
Why, there are lots comparable and nice clubs out there, but being budget minded, you could get both for under $80 in a very nice used condition or if you could find new ones just a bit more.
Both are very easy to get the ball off the ground and forgiving. Rated highly with their peers when introduced as new.
If at all possible go demo some golf clubs at a driving range.

Good choice, try out either a 3 or 4 wood.
