Re: 20 handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
What a ridiculous thread
Guess I will contribute anyway
The above quote is a very important one.
I am a 20 handicap and I drive a few balls over 300 yards almost every time I play. I also loose about 6-8 balls a round, three putt, and hit a few fat/thin iron shots. You do the math and see if it is possible to drive 300 yards and still play bogey golf. Of course you can!
Back to the point. Many, many, many folks hit a good drive and say it was 300 yards. In truth, factoring in doglegs, the angle of the drive, the wind, bad computation, and plain old fish stories, many of these drives are likely much closer to 260 than 300. I have been guilty of this myself in the past. 450 yard hole, I drive to the 150 stakes = a 300 yard drive? Not exactly. Factor in the earlier thoughts if you disagree.
An interesting thing happened just the other day. I finally got a gps. I got the Golf Logix unit made by Garmin. Fantastic unit and I can't believe I did not get one years ago. Point is, I measured many drives. Some I hit very well and thought "300 yards", well, BS, not even close. I measured the "shot distance" on some of the ones I hit well. I was getting 276, 284, etc... but not one was truly a 300 yard drive. On one drive, into 30+ mph wind (I am on Nantucket, Mass), I hit a solid drive, although higher than normal, and measured a whopping 188 yards. That was humbling.
