I am desperate for help! I've had a problem with my swing for about 3 weeks now. I've been to the range approx. 2 dozen times, played 4 times, seen a pro once and still no luck.

My problem, which I think is mental, is that I can't stop from sliding through the ball on my downswing. I leave the club completely open and can't seem to close it. The crazy thing is if I am out in the yard hitting practice balls and it doesn't matter I have no problems (that's why I think it's mental). It's not a sh*nk I've been through that before this is different.

Has anybody gone through something similar? I can't seem to shake this and it's driving me to quit (ok I won't quit but it's driving me crazy)

Thanks in advance!

Try going to a driving range instead of in your backyard (I'm assuming you hit into a net). Because even though you may think you're hitting the ball well, you never really know because you can't see the ball flight.

Have you tried working on half to 2/3 swings rather than full? Assuming proper grip and stance, the point of that drill is to get the clubface square and work on the turn. When I start freeking out and slicing, that's what I fall back on. Good luck.

Thanks - I do like the 1/2 swing drill to get back in sync but that's not working either. I have a feeling that when I have been screwing with my swing I may have change something up.

I've been watching some videos of my swing and it looks like my left elbow is pointing out at the top of my backswing and not towards the ground.

Why don't you record your swing and send it to the swing analyses section of the sandtrap?

It might be something that can be fixed in five minutes.

first check your grip to make sure that the club face is square at address. this happened to me once for an entire bucket and i realized it was just because i had too weak of a grip... another thing you can try: was just at the range and was working on straightening out my long irons and i had this epiphany that works for me and now i strike like a charm: i just focused on keeping my left wrist facing the target at impact and even using the right hand for help adjusting and ensuring that my right hand's palm is facing the target at impact.. try it.. it should work.. this ensures that the face of the club is square at impact and thereby not slicing or hooking... and for some reason when i focused on doing this it straightened out my swing path (i have a steep swing) and it didn't not cause any pushes or pulls.. i think that was due to the fact that it forced me to keep my left arm attached to my chest... let me know if it works for you..

Rehearse your swing in slow motion. At a 12 handicap you are a decent golfer. You are probably off on one aspect of your swing. Rehearse your swing and break it down piece by piece. I had a horrible round on Sunday and thought I was swinging exactly like I had the previous two weeks with much worse results. Turns out I wasn't swinging exactly like I did the previous week. One little thing was throwing everything off and I found it by going through my swing slowly and breaking it down. Do this in front of a mirror and/or let your head turn back and observe your swing plane and hand and arm positions.
