Hi All,

I just bought some A30S irons & the PW is 44 degrees. My gap wedge is 52 degrees.

Is that a good distance gap?

Thanks for any advice!

How far do you hit each?

44' PW? Sounds more like you have a 9 iron and GW and need a PW. In my set that would be exactly like dropping my PW (47') and keeping just my 9 iron (43') and GW (52') which would leave me with a ridiculous yardage gap, YMMV.

I like having 4˚-5˚ degree difference in my wedges. I have a 47˚ PW, 52˚ GW, 56˚ SW and a 60˚ LW.

I think an 8 degree gap is too much IMO when you start talking about your scoring clubs.

Amazing but true. According to this

Remember, it's not so much about the actual loft, but the launch angle. A 44° PW can launch higher than a 48° PW depending on how it's built. Is all the mass really, really low in the clubhead? It is in almost all game-improvement clubs, and as such, they launch quite high for their lofts.

Anything between 90-110 yards I normally hit my 52 degree wedge. Anything above 115 yards I normally go with a PW.

With my old irons.....I just did some research & found out my old King Cobra II's PW was 43 degree.

The original King Cobra PW was 43 degree... The King Cobra II was a 46 degree loft... I would recommend weakening the lofts of your 6 iron-PW by the following values...
6-iron from 28 to 29 7-iron from 32 to 33 8-iron from 36 to 37.5 9-iron from 40 to 42 and PW from 44 to 46... I mean you can just bend the wedge to 46 but you should weaken the lofts of the 6-iron thru wedge for even distrubution of distance... but remember if you change the loft of an iron by one degree you will gain 1 more degree of bounce so be careful...

Onthehung526,

Thanks for correcting me with good info. Now that I look at what I found was the "model I" version.

I'm not a golf pro so I would not the 1st step in bending a club...especially to the right degree.

Also, you mentioned "bounce"....how come "bounce" is normally only talked about with wedges & not other clubs?

Bounce: Measurement in degrees of the angle from the front edge of a club's sole to the point that actually rests on the ground at address. The middle or rear of many soles is lower than the front edge. Bounce is most commonly applied to wedges. More bounce will keep the club from digging too deeply into turf or sand.

I would suggest going to a pro with a lie and loft machine having them bent by a licensed pro... I tinker with my own clubs, but that is because I know what I'm doing... I apprenticed with a clubmaker when I was in high school...

For the five clubs I am discussing I shouldn't cost more than $25-$30 to bend. But Adams has this clause that they like you to take them to a licensed Adams dealer... Dick's Sporting Goods comes to mind as an authorized Adams dealer... If you have a big enough one they will have a lie/loft machine and it won't take more than a couple days for them to get them to you...

onethehunt526,

Thanks for that update! There is a Dick's near where I live. I did not know they did that. That is great info to know.

That's why I asked how far he's hitting his PW and GW now. Just because it's a 44' PW doesn't necessarily mean that he's not hitting it more like a 47' PW due to a number of other factors. Like you pointed out, there is a lot more to the story than just the loft.

The A30S irons are game improvement irons....so maybe I will hit them higher & the new 44' PW the same distance as my old 46' PW. Since I just them I have not had a chance to hit the range yet.

Thanks for all the info!

A few quick thoughts.

1. 44 really isn't that terrible these days. For example, the Titleist A1 PW is 45.

2. The Adams GW, SW, LW all match up with the PW and can be had at TGW for $75 each; GW (49°) • SW (54°) • LW (59°)

3. I also have the A3OS set and dont think I would adjust them just to make them "match" aftermarket wedges. I'm not a huge hitter, but my irons are pretty close to the distances my friends are hitting theirs. They do seem to fly a little higher though. I don't mind because I don't have a lot of backspin and it helps the ball stop better.

Good luck!

Also, don't forget that the lofts of your clubs were designed to match up with your hybrids in that set. If you de-loft your irons, you'll have a big gap between the 6 iron and 5 hybrid. I say just play 'em!

I had the same problem. My PW on my r7 XDs was 44* and I had a 52* PW. What I did was I bought a 48* wedge to match my other wedges and had it bent to 47* and it fits in the gap between the 44* PW and the 52* wedge. This setup works very well for me and the extra wedge gives me more options around the greens.

I looked on TGW & the only Adams wedges are the Tom Watson version....which are 52, 56, & 60 degree. That is the same degrees I have in my Cleveland CG14s.
