I feel like I need a cheap range finder - My pitching lately has been horrible, likely cause a swing issue, but I think it might be of a problem of judging distances - I know how much to swing for certain distances, but when I'm out on the course, I have trouble judging the distance.

Would getting a cheap rangefinder to use till I get a better eye for distances help the "up" part of an up and down?

I would also like to know if there are any cheap ones? I figure that sooner or later that the prices on the 300-400 ones are probably going down when the new ones come out. Keep me updated on this if you find any cheap ones.

I'm hawking this thread for a cheapo too. You get what you pay for, but I don't want to have to pay a regular monthly bill for some GPS system. With the economy as it is, I'm trying to cut my bills not add to them.

lol...

Can you define "cheap"? How about the Leupold GX-I? $299 is cheap to some.

Who's hijacking? I've seen two responses from people that were interested in the thread.

I have a lot of good things to say about Leupold rifle scopes. I'm sure the quality is there on the range finders as well. My Leupold 3-9x40 VXII cost exactly this amount and it has been very reliable and accurate indeed. I'm gonna search for these now.

I'm talking $100 or less.

You should check out the Neo Igolf. $149 from their site, or you can also find it on Ebay with free shipping, no tax. There is a detailed review on this site somewhere, you would just need to search for it. This is the lowest price GPS unit that i have found. I have had it for about 2 months now, and have had a great time with it. No software issues, plenty of courses in their system, etc. $35 additional for a 12 month subscription which will get you 100 downloads. Unit can hold 10 at a time, which for the most golfers is more than enough. simple to remove and add courses anyway. I have been very happy with it and would highly recommend it. Good luck

Also check out the hunting version as well. Basically the same features (different names of course) and a bit cheaper than the golf version. Amazon seems to have the best prices from what I've found.

Here's what I posted on a similar thread... Link to post . The actual post has the links to the product and rebate. Just checked and Walmart online still has the $200 price.

The Bushnell Scout 1000 "Outdoor" version (comparable to the golf version, Bushnell Tour V2) is $200 at Walmart.com. {Product Link}

There's also a $50 mail-in rebate from Bushnell. Walmart sells the same model listed as applicable. {Rebate Link}

I actually went with a GPS, but I've used a Bushnell and they're very handy for their purpose.

You wont find a new rangefinder for less than around $200 (scout 1000 and a mail in rebate is a little less and the best rangefinder in its pricerange) but I did just pick up a bushnell medalist w/pinseeker for $100 on craigslist (used a couple times) just keep looking everyday and you will find deals.

For under $100 all you will get is a visual type with a scale built into the optics. To use it depends on knowing how tall the flagstick is, being able to see the entire flagstick, and even then they can be a bit chancy. I've read that they can be off by as much as 20 yards even when you do everything right. I can eyeball it better than that. I personally wouldn't waste my money on one of those.

My best suggestion is put it on your Christmas wish list.... or at least money to go towards a good laser finder with the technology that will pick the flag out of the background clutter. You should be able to find something in the $200-$250 range, and that isn't a bad deal. At least get a laser a laser rangefinder.... they can be found for $150-$200 without the pin defining electronics, and for shorter range (100 yards and in) are pretty dependable.

At TGW.com...they have a weekend sale going. You can get a Bushnell Medalist Rangefinder for $262 before a $50.

I would say that a rangefinder will help out in the scoring range area...to hone in on distance control. The most impressive feature is the 'scan' feature...where you can visually see what you are measuring to (something that gps can't do). And you can then look without the scope to better tune your distance perception.

    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
