Driver more accurate than 3-wood

How many of you are like this? My driver % is not high but definitely higher than my 3-wood which I top often. If struck well into the wind I get almost the same distance as my driver.

I kept up for 8 rounds with my driving percentage. I kept a stat for fairways hit % with all clubs, and fairways hit % when using a driver. Both stats came out to 72% on the nose. So I'm no more accurate on the short par 4s laying up than I am with a driver. I'm not sure if that speaks well of my driver or poorly of my irons.

I have found that on a dogleg left I am just as close to the hole if I hit my 5 wood. I usually cut my driver and mini-draw my 5 wood. On a dogleg left, either puts me about the same distance from the green.

I also hit my driver better than my 3 wood. I think that the whole idea of a 3 wood being easier to hit has become less true with new driver size and technology. I went back to a 3W for a while, but I'm still more consistant with my Driver and 3I. I think I'm going to buy a 2I Hybrid and see if that will fill the gap.

Was mainly talking about off the tee. Although my driver off the deck is more accurate even though it doesn't get much height, it still comes out as a low searing shot that goes fairly straight.

Even off the deck your driver is more accurate? That is odd....I won't even try a driver deck shot...no confidence there at this point in my game. All I can say is that my experience with a 3 wood was frustrating to say the least. I ended up ditching it 6 weeks back for another wedge, though I have begun experimenting with a new 3 wood. I think the problem was that I went with too light a shaft. I was using a 65 gram UST in the 3 wood, same as my driver and I felt like the club had not weight nor feel to it. I have started using the same clubs in a 85 and 90 gram shaft cut down .5" and much has improved though it hasn't earned a slot in the bag again quite yet.

Off the tee, i'm much more accurate with my driver, with 3 wood I seem to swing too fast and can hit terrible shots that go sideways, this rarely happens with driver.

I'd rarely hit a 3 wood off the fairway, just find it a very difficult shot.

I have read about a small study in to this which suggested that because of all the technology in driver heads now, they are actually starting to hit the ball straighter than your fairway woods.

I honestly feel today's 3 woods are harder to hit than yesterday's. The reason is primarily shaft length. I have used my dad's old 3 woods, about the same size head as today, but shafts at 42", and that club is money. Easy to hit off the ground or tee, goes about 230 every time.

Today's 3 woods are just getting longer and longer and longer in the shaft. Combine that with some significant shaft torque (which is really reaching the limit with graphite) and they are very hard to hit. Look at the guys on tour, they are hitting 270 and up with 3 woods. Maybe they can control a 45" 3 wood, but I can't.

Reliable distance and control is the name of the game. I'd rather put it 230 down the middle, than 260 in the woods.

All this being said, I have long arms, and a relatively short wrist to floor measurement (despite my slightly tall hieght at 5' 11"). So probably proper fitting for me, especially for driver and woods, is a shorter club than most people.

Can't hit my driver off the deck....so my response is for tee shots only.


I'll sometimes use my 4-wood off the tee on holes where there is a dogleg and I don't want to chance running my drives through them. My driver...even when I swing it easy can come off too hot in some of these cases and will run more when it lands. The 4W, however, comes off really high and sits down soft.

If I'm rusty...playing my first round after a weeklong layoff....then the driver certainly offers a bit more contact insurance as the 460cc head dwarfs the tiny (by comparison) 177cc 4W head.

My game, though, is in a slight tranistion stage....made a grip adjustment to help with lag and wrist pain...it's making my wood play a bit freaky, thus the return of the 15hybrid to the bag. Looking forward to some golf midweek this week to continue with the changes.

same here. i'm much more consistent and comfortable w/ the driver. i have tried 5+ fairway woods and could not hit them to save my life. I recently bought an adams idea pro hybrid 16*. The face is super hot. i can hit it about 240 off the tee. Just trying to dial it in still since its my first real hybrid.

I've always thought a 3 wood should be my go to money club when i need it straight, but this just has not been the case for me.
