I went out for a quick nine Sunday afternoon. As usual, I went in the late afternoon. As I hit my approach shot on the second hole, I put it left of the green near some trees. I grabbed my SW and putter off of the cart and walked over. I found my ball under some low hanging branches. I didn't wanna walk back to the cart, so I tried something new.

I played the ball just outside of my right (back) foot. This delofted the club face dramatically. It produced a nice little pitch shot.

Is there a good technique for getting spin on the ball in a shot like this? Mine hit short and rolled out, but I'd like to be able to check up a little better.

For those of you who are actually good golfers...what is this called?

I call this a "pinch" shot. The ball is back in your stance with the hands forward, and you really pinch the ball between the delofted clubface and the turf. It's somewhere between a long chip and a hop and stop pitch. I play this shot with a 56, 60 or 64 depending on how far I want it to fly and how little I want it to release. This little low pitch will stop a lot quicker the higher loft you use. Also those spin milled grooves, no matter the brand of club, make a huge difference on this shot.

this is called a punch shot haha. they stay low and tend to run out more so than check up and bite. my tip for getting some more bite on the shot would be to hit down on the ball a bit more to produce the pinch off the club face which is necessary for producing spin. try it out and good luck!

In situations like that I play a similar shot, but kinda opposite.

Take a 7 iron, play it forward. Keep the arms stiff, and a short little swing with a firm contact. The idea it to bounce off the edge of the green (almost all the ones on my home course are raised) and have it roll towards the hole.

Helped me get up and down on sunday :)

Old school spinner shot. Ball at right foot, weight on left foot, close the club face, hit down on the ball (ball then turf). With a high lofted club, produces a lot of spin on a low trajectory.

That's some old school wedge work right there. Harvey Penick loved that shot. Use it all the time on the hardpan of Texas!

I really need to try one of these spin milled groove wedges. I hear they are fantastic compared to my watson wedges.
