When you hit a putt, do you like to go right at the hole and risk leaving it long? Or do you hold up and worse case scenario leave it short?

Mainly I want to leave the ball below the hole, but I voted for short.

I like my putts to die in the hole. I've zoomed a few in, but I never felt good about it. I don't subscribe to the "never up never in" theory although it has a lot of merit. I'd rather tap in that second putt if I do miss. Now, if I could hit the 8 foot come-back like Tiger.....

Neither. I hit a putt the speed that will send it about 17" past the hole, ideally. That's not really "long" or "short" - it's a good speed.

I try to hole every putt.

I always aim for 18"....is that extra inch making me 3-putt?

I think the important thing is to have a consistent approach to putt speed. That way you will be able to get a feel for how much break to play every time. I would suggest not trying to go 17" past on one hole, dying it into the cup on another, and ramming it home on another still.

Neither, I try to hit a putt that goes just beyond the hole using the natural break at that speed. On short putts I do tend to hit them firmer. Partly because I play public courses and softly hit balls tend to hit stuff, so I power it through a bit.

I'm trying to hole everything reasonable. For me, that's figuring out the best exact point at the cup my ball will securely roll in . And hitting a putt the speed that will accomplish that. Like I said I try to roll it in, so my 'ideal miss' is going to be within 18 inches beyond the hole. The ball will never go in if it's short, right Yogi?

My ideal stopping point for the ball is in the bottom of the cup! My favorite miss is on the high-side of the hole, so gravity still has a chance to grab the ball on the lip and bring it in.

How do you know on each putt (uphill, downhill & sidehill) what 17" past the hole feels like? And who doesn't try to hole every putt?

I voted "short" becuase there were only two answers but I like my putts to die into the hole specifically if they are down hill...I am not afraid to run a putt by the hole but I try to put "to the hole" and not past it but I will admit that 100% of putts that come up short do not go in...just my 2 cents

And who doesn't try to hole every putt?

I would say high handicappers are not trying to hole ever putt. They just want to get it close. At least that was my goal when I started golfing many years ago.

Cheers,
Eric

Try to hole every putt...if not then 10 to 15 inches pass the hole is fine.

This is the first post I've ever seen where I've agreed with every word!

Dave Peltz says that a putt should be 17" pass the hole to be the most effective.

I voted long. I try and hole the putt and have it "die" into the hole but I'd much rather have it go long than short. I seem to have a knack for sinking the 8 foot return putts. Unfortunately the 8 foot first putts have a lower hit rate .

There's nothing that gets me madder than hitting a perfectly struck putt that ends up 3 inches in front of the hole straight down the middle... except hitting it too hard, and having it lip out. I voted short.

That is my goal. Many times, it goes about 3-4 feet beyond. I prefer it to stop below the hole, if there is a slope.

Leaving it short gives you 0% chance of sinking a putt.

I voted for short, but I try to hole every putt preferably by the ball dying in the hole. If you can have your putts consistently die at the cup you can increase the cup size from 4.25 to almost 7 inches. I was shown this by Brian Bateman, who as you may know is on the PGA Tour and is a local golfer here. He told us he was shown the lesson from AJ Bonar, the guy who does the "Truth about Golf" teaching series. I tried to find it on youtube but havent come across it yet...Anyway, it eliminates lip-outs and brings gravity into play. Works pretty well for me. If I can find the video I will post it.....

I voted long, I think its better to be slightly long then short. I agree that short putss will never make it in.

I also must say that I dont know what 17" feels like, but I can tell what missing feels like, I'm good at that one . Anyway, Next season, I hope will be the season of change. I hope to get from the 30 handi, to around 15. I need to work on squaring the heads of all clubs, I always leave them open, including the putter, *sigh*.

    • Day 97 - Right oblique strain, so I took it easy with some putting.
    • Well, to be fair, if you have an iPhone and Apple watch connected via bluetooth, you can do everything from your watch though I suppose the screen is somewhat smaller than the Shotscope/Garmin devices
    • Day 45, 4/09/2024: Had a range session again today. Started on my priority piece for a while. Then worked on targets. 5 balls with a 6 iron at a 175 yard target. Then 5 balls with an 8 iron at a 150 yard target. Then 5 balls with PW at a 125 yard target. Then 5 balls with a 7-iron at a 165 yard target. Then 5 balls with a 9 iron at a 140 yard target. Finally 5 balls with GW at a 110 yard target. Overall it went very well.  Then later on I did my overspeed training. I sometimes forget to mention when I do that.
    • Day 5: more drills for the arms.
    • Walking up 10, is an eye opening experience, you don’t really get the feel of that elevation on TV. I was pretty tired walking up it.
