Ben Hogan is the man. I was watching on tv last night that he didnt even see his playing partner get a hole in one at the masters one time. He was too focused!

Shooting at or below your age has got to be every golfer's dream. Still being that good when you're old or having an amazing round when you're a bit younger (ok like 61 or something but still). I remember Sir Bob Charles shooting a 68 last year at the New Zealand Open, 3 shots below his age!

one of the caddies was watching moe hit balls.....1 after the other straight as an arrow.................he walked down the line and mentioned it to hogans caddy.......hogan looked over and said " if he is hitting the ball straight everytime there is a mistake"

the caddy went back.....and good ole moe was chatting with people and the caddy said....."mr. hogan said if your hitting the ball straight..its a mistake....

moe looked over and said.......go get him bring him down here and

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I was watching TGC the other day and found out an interesting fact. Ben Hogan never made a hole in one. I think that's a testament to just how lucky a hole in one really is. A man who studied the golf swing as much as Hogan, who had one of the greatest swings of all time, never made an ace. Truly amazing.

I've heard it said (possible on this forum) that he never made a hole in one because he never aimed right at the flag stick.

I loved the story about Billy Casper and Hogan when they played a round together.Apparently it was towards the end of Hogan's career, and he was was just hitting perfect shots around the course, and made a 70 without hitting any bad putts, but didn't make any great ones.

Casper shot 66 and was all over the golf course, and Hogan told him that if you couldn't putt young man you would selling hot dogs behind the tenth tee.

If you've read the art of putting then the story is in there,it made me laugh.

    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
    • True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.
    • I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
