To answer what you really want to know...it should be in line with the target. If it is pointing left it means the golfer is coming over the top.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Is this a question about where the divot should point or one of those polls where everyone is supposed to post which way their divots point ?

Off-topic perhaps, but I like to smell my divots.

Thanks for the replies. I started this thread because I wanted to get a feel for whether or not I should try to change what I was doing. After a lesson last year I started relying more on a fade as my go-to shot. I have become comfortable going to a fade rather then trying to prevent it. After a shot that was all over the flag, landing about five feet, from about 125 out, I noticed that the divot was pointing to the left of the green. This is because I have come over the top. I had never noticed this issue when I didn't hit mostly fades.

It seems like for either a fade or a draw a good thing to do is swing so that the divot mostly points to the target. I think that with this over the top move of mine I am losing some control. For someone with a left pointing divot are there some drills or technique points ot there that would get me more on-line?

Depends what your game is. I hit a draw (most of time) and my divots are straightish but slightly right of target. If you're a fader (nothing wrong with that; loads of pros are) your divots should be going left a bit I would have thought; if they're straight or right and you're fading I would imagine they'll lead to a miss right.

I prefer a draw as I've always had a worry about coming over the top; if I stop drawing the ball it's usually a good indicator that I'm losing it a touch.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

My divots point slightly to the left of th target. I think this is because i have an outside to swing which accounts for my fade/slice
