My new driver arrived yesterday, I went to the range this morning. Once I got good and warmed up I pulled out new driver. At first it was long and straight, then the next hit was straight but not so long. I looked at my point of impact on the face and it was just slightly toeward of center, but still more center than toeward. Then I noticed was appeared to be a fissure in the non metallic covering on the exxtreme toe. There was obvious displacement. I took it to the pro and he confirmed that it was indeed a crack.

Double dawg bummer!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I am sending this baby back. Surely this was a defect and surely it rarely ever happens.

Can anyone relate?

I had a driver cave in on the top of the club above the face. I sent it back to the company and they sent me a replacement. It was a Daiwa driver, back in 1992.

Two guys in my 4some had early Nicklaus drivers. 360 with the hot face.
After about three years they developed crack along the bottom of the face. Nicklaus replaced with the 440 model. That must have 5 or 6 years ago now. BTW both are very loyal to Nicklaus because of the customer service!

I've never seen it with my own eyes but in the long drive competitons don't they crack their drivers all the time. I guess that because of their power and speed it is much more likely.

I've cracked a driver...look to the right of the "M", not so much as a sky mark on the top of that club (since I only had it 4 months and never sky'd it), but it still cracked a straight line along the top. Almost as though the face was coming off the club...

Taylormade used to make Maxfli, they don't anymore but still replaced it with a Tour Burner, boy was I happy

I was on the course with my uncle and his driver head was cracked yet he didnt care too much, I believe it was the 7-8 hole, swing with his driver and bang the head was in multiple piecesI was a cheap driver, but I didnt expect that to happen, and obviously neither did he.

A little more unrelated but I have broken shafts before, not because I hit the ground or an obstacle, the shaft just snaped at the tip and the 3-wood head went about 150 yards down range. That was fun trying to get everyone at the range to stop hitting their balls and retrieve my head.

I've cracked a persimmon (back in the day) and two graphite headed drivers back in the 1990's. The technology has changed quite a bit since the early 1990's and I haven't had a problem since.

Good luck getting yours resolved.

Never had a problem with a driver, but I broke a 5-iron a few weeks ago. Had a funny lie with the ball above my feet, but I'm pretty sure I hit the ball cleanly. The follow through felt... well... wrong, and then I watched the club head sail 30 yards left while the ball flew about 50 yards right. Darndest thing, I figure I must have had a fracture in the club for some time that finally gave out, because I certainly didn't hit fat enough to explain that. The hosel cracked straight through.

Yep, I cracked the head of a Cleveland HiBore XLS- right up at the very toe kind of where the crown and face meet. I took it to the golf shop I bought it and they gave me a brand new one off the rack.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess it is more common than I would have thought. I've uploaded a photo of the day's disappointment. Thanks again.

wow I didn't think that that could realy happen. I know the shaft has a bad habbit of breaking at contact... and I know how mad you can get when the head goes further than the ball. I will have to start watching for cracks.

I used to work in a retail golf outlet and it was not uncommon to see damages in the club heads and faces similar to what you're describing. The titanium bodies and faces of these new drivers are very thin. Any weaknesses in the metal can cause early fracture and/or fatigue. The good news is that the manufacturers (most, anyway) recognize these inherent faults and readily replace those that get damaged.

As most have said, the driver is being picked up by the manufacturer tomorrow and a replacement is being sent. They said it wasn't really that common and said yes, it must have been defective. They will go over it with fine tooth comb to improve their product, I am told.

Yea I can relate.... got a brand new R7 Quad last year and cracked it in the same place after 3 rounds! Got it warrantied and then sold it and never played a Taylormade again. Went and got a Cleveland XLS Hi-bore and haven't looked back!

I this with a 7 iron this summer, off a tee shot at that :)

Felt like a great smooth swing until I noticed the club head sailing down the hill into the bushes.

I few years ago I put a perfect golf ball shaped dent in the face on my Cobra SZ 440 driver. It was not real noticeable to the naked eye. The first thing I noticed was that the sound of the driver changed and my drives were not going as far by a good 30 yards or more. The pro at my club confirmed that there was in fact a slight but detectable dent, he also agreed that it did not feel right when hit. Cobra also agreed and replaced it with another SZ 440. The new club was good but not quite as loud or as long as the original. The original SZ 440 was probably the longest driver I have ever hit, thus I believe that there was some defect that casued it to be very loud, very long, and eventually dent.
