I need the most help in my chipping consistently around the green and from 70 yards and in to help me play a consistent round everytime I play.

I am also working on the following:

1) left hand grip position for a stronger position with my left hand and proper grip pressure
2) backswing and slow tempo
3) tilting my back shoulder lower to promote a shorter backswing
4) club distance from my body
5) slight forward press
6) taking the club back and up without it making me sway back.
7) swing with my big muscle instead of my arms and hands

What are you working on to improve your golf game recently?

All I'm really working on is to drive the ball down the middle. I don't care if it goes 220 yards or 280 yards as long as it is in the short stuff. After that I feel that I need to commit to every single one of my shots. I have a decent long iron (4-6) game and a not-so-bad short iron game (7-PW). My wedge game is good as long as I have my 58* in my hand. Short game is good but you can always get better, as well as putting. So all I'm really trying to work on is putting the ball in the fairway.

im like bogey hitter...i want to hit my driver straight. right now i play a fade. i feel if i put my driver in the fairway i would see remarkable results. i hit my irons straight consistently but i often find myself without a shot at the green because of my drives.

I'm working on changing my whole swing right now to something that is much easier to duplicate. It is pretty much turning into the stack and tilt type of swing. After just a month and a half, I am hitting much better iron shots and am taking up a divot after I hit the ball with many of my shots and almost every short iron/wedge shot. I'm also working on having my eye be over top of the ball when putting and being more upright when putting.

I mainly want to improve my longer irons (3-5) If I could hit them cleaner then I would make many more greens. I scramble not too badly and driving is ok usually giving me a chance to go for greens. I am shortening my swing a little on the longer irons to attempt this and this seems to be making me slightly more accurate but I have a bit to go.

Im working on anything from 100m and in, lots of wedges at the range trying to get a feel for distance, 100 odd balls a day with my PW 52 anhd 56 should do the trick and if it doesnt then my cap was never supposed to be any lower!

Right now I'm working on hitting the ball then hitting the ground, taking a divot after impact. I'm working on strengthening my grip and hitting down on the ball as best I can.

Other then that, I'm working on not three putting. So far 2 of my last three rounds I've been able to accomplish this goal.

Picking out a target, making solid contact on the sweet spot with my irons, and always hitting the ball first, taking very little divot and trying to land every shot within 20 feet of the range pin at 80 to 130 yards, depends on the line. With my irons there is a huge difference in hitting the sweet spot and not. I can see from my results that having less forgiving irons definitely makes you work harder to hit it well. Its really amazing how, learning to hit ones irons better translate to better contact with hybrids and even the driver.

Working mainly on toe flow with the putts. i am leaving the face kinda open throughout the stroke, as in i open it in the back swing, but it never closes to a good position, leaving my putts out to the right.

Also working on incorporating my 54 a bit more. i think i used it once around the green in the last 54 holes i played, the rest were all 60's.

finally, becoming consistent with the 3W, amd really tired of hitting a great drive, be in range to hit the green, and then hit some nasty variety of shots with the 3.

Oh, am also working on the massive slice. Just cuz.

Being over the max handicap, as you might imagine, I'm working on quite a few things...

Trying to get clean contact with my irons. I can either hit fat or pick mostly clean, but neither of these options gets me the trajectory or distance I'd like. Really trying to get the feel of a clean downward hit followed by a divot.

Also trying to get the weight shift down without bringing back my old rocking habit. I get it occasionally and you can see it in the distance/trajectory of my drives. When I don't have it, I pop them up. When I do, it has the nice straight takeoff...

Trying to get back to my old chipping/putting practice routine.

Picked up a sand wedge, so trying to incorporate that new club and to work on sand play. My last round I wound up in sand on 3 out of 9 holes and stunk it up. Biggest problem was actually a fairway bunker where the sand wedge won't help... that sorta gets up to my fat iron shot problem.

There's probably more, but I'll stop there...

My short game ... chips and short pitches to a specific spot on the green and distance contol with my putter (I have a tendency to leave putts short rather than putting past the hole).

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Two things right now:

1. Nice and easy drive down the middle - don't care about getting max length.

2. Chip closer to hole for more 1-putts.

I think both of those will really help my score and will add to my enjoyment of every round.

Right now is the transition from the driving range to the course.

Finally got to go out yesterday after weeks of bad weather and the one thing I found is I almost get intimidated by the longer grass.

I end up trying to blast through it thinking its gonna hold my club back to much and it just messes with my swing. Need to be more casual and just relax and swing like I can on the range.

    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on.Β πŸ˜‰ Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.Β  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seemΒ  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
