An easy way to determine the flight height of an iron if you are behind a tree and want to see if your club will be lofted enought to get over the tree is simply laying the club on the ground with the face perpendicular to the ground and the shaft pointing towards the tree will give you the angle of the flight of the ball.

If you need to add a little more loft what I do is aim left and open the club face slightly.

I guess it depends on how you hit a shot though. I tend to put my shorter irons 7-PW very high in the air compared to other players. I played with a guy earlier in the week and he thought I'd hit PW when I'd hit a 7! Whereas his shorts had a much lower profile...

If I need to hit a shot over an obstacle I open the club face and feet (sometimes the clubhead will be at almost 90 degrees to my feet) and just flop it.

...club on the ground with the face perpendicular to the ground...

Perpendicular or parallel? I've seen instructors recommend that you lay the club on the ground along the target line face up with the grip pointing toward the target, then step lightly on the club head so the face becomes parallel to the ground, and the angle that the shaft rises to will approximate the launch angle of the ball. Are we talking about the same thing?

this is a very interesting tip which should to useful to most people. However if you hit your irons like the pros, the ball comes off the face low, and climbs up into the air because of the large ammount of spin applied. there ball flight almost looks like an exponential equasion when drawn on a graph.... I wish i could achieve this ballflight, because it looks absolutly amazing in person.
