GM Ends 9 year sponsorship of Tiger Woods

I've been wondering for years when these huge endorement contracts would start drying up. So much money is spent on 'sponsoring' sporting events and athletes, but I can't believe that these companies are actually able to recoup these dollars as a direct response to the endorsments. I'm sure sometimes it works out (Nike with Michael, then Tiger for Nike Golf are exceptions) but I doubt that Buick has made back more money than they gave Tiger directly because of his endorsement. These millions and millions of dollars for endorsement and sponsorships deals end up coming out of consumers pockets at some point anyway.

I don't want companies to stop sponsoring golf tournaments and other sporting events, but I also do not want the cost of everything else to go way up to pay for those things. Having worked in advertising I know there are usually more effective ways to spend the advertising and marketing budget for those things. It's one thing for an athlete or athletic event to be sponsored by a company involved in athletics (Nike, Adidas, Titleist, Gatorade, etc.), but makes little sense for Lexus or Yum! brands (JB Holmes) to sponsor these.

From what I have read about $7M US per annum. Don't be surprised if he signs a deal for more in the next month of so.

The main resons companies like yum brands do this is because the atheletes will entertain them. Such as a yum brands holding a long drive contest with J.B. Holmes for major share holders.

I have wondered about these contracts as well. Did Buick do accurate studies to see how many new Buicks they sold because of the ads with Tiger? Buick's customer base is mainly OLD white folks, and NOT young guys. Given that, did the Tiger ads PERSUADE more young guys to buy Buicks, or did more OLD folks switch from other cars to buy Buicks?

With my regional golf magazine, we sell many coupon ads so the business paying for the ad has a direct way to measure results, and that ads with us prove their worth. We have a waiting list for advertisers since we will not sell more than 1/3 of a page for ads. Business owners and marketing people know that our ads work----people read them, respond to them, and new customers and increased revenues result. Many advertising marketers do NOT want their customers or potential customers to measure actual results because they would find out that the ads (especially in the print media) simply are ineffective. Did Buick ever really measure the results of the Tiger ads? Here is the next question: what will Buick do about their sponsorship of TWO PGA Tour events? What increased REVENUE have they received from the sponsorship fees they have paid out?

This is only the beginning of the effects of this severe recession on golf and sports in general. The "days of wine and roses" are over. Golf knows what is coming. In last Saturday's "Wall Street Journal", John Paul Newport , the newspaper's regular golf columnist, wrote about the end of the "Golden Age" that included Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and Gene Sarazen, with The Dark Days. Golf clubs closed down by the hundreds.

We MAY see some of the beneficial aspects of this bad economic period that also occurred in the Great Depression: 1. The closed private courses may reopen as public ones. 2. The avid, core players will continue to play and support the game, while they may be joined by many average people, who will play on the reopened public courses. Golf in the US of A has been stagnant for the past five years, according to the stats of number of golfers and rounds played compiled by the National Golf Foundation. The growth period of the prior period, with many new courses opened up, had hit a brick wall. The number of rounds played this year, through the month of September, were down 1.4%. Retail spending was down 3.4%, and declining drastically. You may have read about the layoff of 300 workers at the Sea Island Resort in Georgia. 3. The LPGA has already announced that next year, total purses will be down $5 million, and 3 tournaments are being taken off the schedule for lack of sponsorship, and the ADT will not be held next year (which is sponsored by the Tour itself). So far, the Buick Division of the ill fated General Motors has said that it will continue sponsorship of 2 PGA Tour events, but do not be surprised if that is changed with a prearranged Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. You can only imagine the decrease in money spent by the equipment companies, ball manufacturers on endorsement money and advertising. Golf will survive, as it did during the Great Depression, but it will be affected. The termination of the contract Buick had with Tiger is a start, and there will be more news of this nature.

I wonder if courses with high green fees (IE Arcadia Bluffs $175) will be forced to lower their rates dramatically to survive.

It always seemed odd that Tiger would be pushing Buicks, anyway. Buick is by far more of an old man's car than a young man's. Here in South Florida, you see a LOT of Buicks, and 98% of them are being driven by elderly people. Tiger is more appealing to the younger set, I think, and he would be more of a natural to be endorsing sportier type cars. Buick is a fine car, but just does not have the appeal for the younger crowd. I am surprised Tiger lasted nine years. I would also imagine that GM's financial woes have a lot to do with it too, and I suspect Buick is going to drastically change its marketing strategy to focus on the market it seems to already have, namely, the older crowd.

    • 47+49 for a 96. Just lost it today. Two way miss off the tee. Could not hit a decent iron. Three putted like at least 8 holes. Not good when the short game is the best part of the day 😭😭
    • Phillyk is very close by. Ok, I understand how the watch and tags are meant to be used, but I was just curious how it actually works. I can't really think of any other way than what I mentioned above. No worries. If it works it works. I'll probably pick one up. My co-worker mentioned a free app called 18 Birdies which offers similar services. However I personally do not like keeping my phone in my pocket while golfing, nor do I want to be clicking around on the phone while out on the course. I toss my phone in my bag and leave it there until I am done golfing. Tapping a club head to a watch seems wat more convenient.  
    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.
