Just like my second favorite sport, football, sometimes changes in the lineup are needed to inspire!

After 10 years of faithfully playing Mizuno forged blades I made a switch this off season to MacGregor MT Pro-M, Forged 1025, muscleback irons. A few weeks back I had the oppertunity to demo a set and I was sold on the change. I played MacGregor MT irons for many years in the 70's and early 80's but for me they lost thier way in the mid 80's. When I first saw these new irons come out I was as excited as a 10 year old school boy. They look and feel like what I had been waiting for all these years.

I also made a ball change from Taylormade TP Red to Bridgestone B330-RX. I guess as I get older I can't compress the ball as much and got incredible distance off this ball in the fall season.

No changes in the Driver/4Wood department, Taylormade still makes the finest metal woods in the business in my opinion. The R7 is still the best Driver I've ever hit, bar none!

Looking forward to 2009 season, I hope to finally get back to scratch golf with these changes.

Definitely agree with you on that!!!!!! Having a new club or two can make a difference on how you feel and having the satisfaction of hitting a solid shot with it. With the economy and all, it is tough, but there are products that are fairly priced and good quality.

I am all excited about the 2009 golf season, but it hasn't really snowed too hard in Michigan yet:(

As always, I intend to regrip my clubs over the winter. I think ive decided on Golf Pride Tour Wraps. My dad has them on a few of his older clubs and I just love the feel.

I also won a bet with my father for a new set of irons. The Cleveland CG Tours are a frontrunner, but the Macgregor Mt-Pro M's and the Wilson FG59 are running in close second. I also intend to replace my three hybrid, considering the one that I currently play belongs to dad.

A Hibore XLS Tour may find its way into my bag as well if I can foot the bill

The only change I have made... is swapping out a 2-iron for a 5-wood... I might put a 54 and 58 instead of a 52 and 56 but i don't know...

I just got these Taylor Made blades... and I don't really like the feel... (I have 17 sets of irons its just a matter of going into my closet and grabbing the right set.)

I'm thinking about going to Snake Eyes Equipment... Or Perhaps KZG Irons... any suggestions PM...

onthehunt,

I played Snake Eyes 600c irons for quite awhile and Golfsmith Tour Cavity irons before that. As I built my own clubs I saved a bit of money. To me the quality of both of these clubs are fine for my game :) Had the TT Dyn Gold X in both with golf pride cord grips. /onthehunt I recently switched to the Mizuno MX 200's as my misses have been out towards the toe lately. I love'em. Very little loss of distance on mishits. Nice sole, not too wide, beveled on leading edge helps guard against fat shots. Very little offset, and the head size (85mm) is no bigger than the Callaway x20 tour (85mm) which is considered a players club. I personally would consider these a players club also, with a great deal of forgiveness. I may be blinded by my love, but I can't find a better iron for my game. I like to go at it hard and the extra forgiveness is just what I need. I've been playing the Titleist 905r with UST v2 75 xstiff in 8.5 degree. I bomb it with this club, spin launch and landing angle are all optimal. The only thing I wish it had was a bit more foregiveness. I don't try and work the ball, if I get to the hole where I need to turn my driver I take a 3 wood instead. So this year I will try and go get fit for a Ping Rapture V2 driver for added forgiveness. I've also been playing the Titleist 906f2 3 wood 15 degree w UST 85. Again, my launch, spin are all optimized with this, but I want more forgiveness. Will be trying to get fit for a Ping V2 Rapture 3 wood or maybe a Callaway (had one for years and it just looked perfect and was my go to club) I've been playing Snake eyes 600 wedges in 52, 56 and 60 , however that was before when my PW was 48 degrees. Now with the new 45 degree PW( yuck) there is too much of a gap between PW and GW, so next year I will be getting some Titleist Vokey Spin Milled in 50, 56, 60 or 50, 54, 58 , haven't decided yet. I go back and forth between a Ping Rapture Hybrid and my 3 iron, depending on the course i'm playing and the conditions (mostly the wind), don't anticipate any changes here. Might play around with Ping Rapture v2 5 wood instead of the hybrid. But for some reason I hit hybrids better. My Guerin Rife Two Bar putter will be staying in the bag, I love this thing. I am going to try and get more loft put on the face however, I like to press my hands forward. My ball will continue to the the Titleist ProV1x. Gloves will continue to the Footjoy Softjoys. Shoes are the same, Footjoy Reelfit (the ones with no laces to tie , has a knob on back of shoe to tighten laces.). Funny story, was playing with some guy , and he asks "Do those pump up?" My bag will be the same, Sun Mountain something carry bag ($160), won it in a long drive :)

The biggest change in 2009 will be one of golf's biggest secrets of all time being introduced into the equipment industry--- http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_r...ilable-in-2009

I mean when i read that i never knew about it

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

new driver for x-mas, im going o get fitted, but probly will end up with the tour burner tp. the r7 425 has seemed to have lost its pop.
i will also be adding a burner rescue tp 18* and a burner tp 3 wood in the bag. this will complete my wood line up.

Upgraded a good few things at the end of 08 for the 09 season and onwards.

T3 and T5 woods - loving them right now, the 5 wood especially.

54 and 58 wedges - more forgiving than the Vokeys, getting very consistent with them, and the 54 comes with 10* bounce as opposed to my Vokey which was 14* - it restricted me.

Putter - very nice putter, really liking the natural feel to it. Great on fast and slow greens.

Puma shoes - got these for the range and to stick in the back of the car on a permanent basis. Really comfortable. Look great too.

I might try a major OEM driver for the first time in years.

The long end of my bag looks in one respect like 1965 or something; I actually have a matching "set" of (metal)woods. They are as follows:

Zeider Valiant driver, 13º loft, 56º lie, 1º open face, 44½"
Zeider Absolute 18º and 23º fairway metals.

The driver is titanium, at least, but it's somewhere in the 360-375cc range in size, quite large then but rather small now.

The Penley shafts are perhaps obsolete but perfectly playable.

There are two major distinguishing factors with these metals:

First, they have NO contemporary technology at all. They're just hollow metal sculptures like the original Taylor Made "Pittsburgh Persimmons" of the early 1980s. In one respect, they have LESS technology than the old Taylor Mades because they don't have that sound deadening foam that was for some reason blown into the first metals. They must have been breaking us into the new sound slowly!

Second, however, and more importantly, they fit.
Try to find a generously lofted OEM driver with a flattish lie and a square or open face. The OEMs incorrectly assume that if you have less than 110mph swingspeed, you also tend to cast the club over the top. Forget about seniors with a good swing plane but diminished swingspeed.

Now, at least for new Callaway, Taylor Made, and Ping models, they have a device called the clocking ferrule. Using a .335" tip shaft, you can orient the ferrule in one direction to alter lie angle, or in another to alter face angle and loft together. What the OEMs wouldn't offer you, your qualified local clubfitter might be able to rectify.

Still, just because I can try something different doesn't mean I should. I like my Zeiders and will in all liklihood stick with them. Maybe I'll try a fitting for more modern shafts.

Definitely agree with you on that!!!!!! Having a new club or two can make a difference on how you feel and having the satisfaction of hitting a solid shot with it. With the economy and all, it is tough, but there are products that are fairly priced and good quality.

I grew up in Michigan and currently live in NY, so I know where your coming from with the snow,,,lol! It is a good time to buy equipment if your patient and willing to shop around. I was lucky enough to be able to apply a couple coupons and got a great deal on my Pro-MT's. I payed nearly half of what they are going for in the pro shops for a new set on ebay. I have always played standard loft/lie/stiff so fitting was no issue, but for others it could be a problem. It's funny how a Pro Shop will always qoute you full price when you walk in the door but if they are trying to reduce inventory on ebay the price drops dramatically! Granted forged blades are not a hot item in golf these days and from time to time you can get incredible deals on them.

Well, the Ping G5's that have served me well for about 3 years have been retired, and I've just bought a 3-PW set of I5's which should arrive Friday.

Also, thinking of swapping my 52 degree Tour wedge for a 54 degree Tour W with the T grind. Everything else as is.
