Anyone still carry a 5-wood???

I used to carry a 2-iron, recently I went to a 5-wood to get more air under the ball... and it lands like a wedge (mostly so I can reach 13 at Bethpage Black in two... lol)

I also did it because I feel on some par-5s I get into what we call no mans land... In between 3-wood and 2-iron so i yanked the 2-iron and put the 5-wood in...

Any reasons that you switched or didn't switch or went to hybrids...

Anyone still carry a 5-wood???

Well I'm not very confidant with my 3 wood off of the deck and I use a relatively high lofted driver because my score balloons when I end up in the rough. Furthermore I did not hit my 3 wood much farther than my 5 wood, in fact off the deck at times I could hardly notice a difference and there was only a 10yard difference off the tee between the two. So I went with the 5 wood and took out the 3 wood...it's really my money club and the one I feel I am best with. I usually add another wedge or my 3 iron depending on the course.

oddly enough i carry a 5wood and 2iron hybrid alot at the same time, depending on the course. normally at my home course when playing in a match i will pick the 5wood because the par 5's have a flat fairway to an uphill green so 2iron will just run right off.

depending on course conditions i carry one of the other, normally the hybrid for flatter or links type courses, but most often its the 5wood. i also hit the 5wood better than my 3wood so it comes in handy.

Right now I carry a 3w & 5w. My next club is a 3i. It's not the best setup, but it works really well for the courses I've been playing lately. I haven't met a Par 3 that requires more than my 3i, & I'm not challenging Par 5s like I used to, but I can alternate a 2h at any time. --LBB

Until recently I played driver, 3 wood, and 2 hybrid. I just added a 5 wood and removed the 2H and it seems to be working well for me. The 5 wood is easy to hit off the deck and has a higher launch than the hybrid. Although a well struck 2H is very accurate and has a piercing flight I wasn't very consistent with it. I may not be much help as a mid handicap but these are my observations.

That's me all the way!!!

Really my 5 wood is a 4 wood. Well it's a 17* 5 wood. So it's a 5 wood head, 42" 5 wood shaft and 4 wood loft. It's been a great club for me. But I'm not a +5 handicap either. The reason I chose to go with one is that it is right at the limit of loft and shaft length that I can hit with consistancy. Any less loft and I've reached the point of diminishing returns in launch conditions off the deck, given my clubhead speed and angle of attack. Any more shaft length and I'm just not comfortable over the ball. But for the better guys.....Is Tiger still carrying a 5 wood? Or should I say WAS he when last he played in the US Open? I really can't remeber. But I know a lot of the pros are still carrying them according to a lot of the "what's in my bags" that I read.

I always keep a 5 wood in my truck, but typically carry a 2H instead because I prefer it off the tee. When we intend to play longer courses I sometimes put the 5 wood in bag because I prefer it off the turf over the 2H and the 3W. I very seldom need the 5W now because I'm seldom at a distance where it's needed. If I need a club longer than 4H off turf now, I usually just lay up (unless it's a wide open lane to green).

I carried a 5 wood for the longest time until I noticed that I was hooking it too much. I learned to choke up on my 3 wood and hit it the distance of my 5 wood. I would consider buying another 5 wood because it was useful from about 200 yards and landed softly on the green.

I can't hit 2 iron and would not consider hitting my 3 iron off the fairway at this time, but I would like to try hitting a Mizuno mx 25 3 iron off the fairway.

as a +5 handicap golfer what are your lowest scores for 18 holes and what do you average per round? What are you short and long term goals? How do you get from a 4 to a 1 handicap golfer? practice, practice and more practice everyday?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I carry a 3 and a 5 wood. I love the 3 wood off the tee because it goes straight as an arrow. However, I have no confidence with it off of the tee. That's where the 5-wood comes in. I like hitting it into par 5s that I am out of range with. It keeps me in the fairway. I never use it on par 4s, 3s, or from the tee. Most courses I play do not require that shot.

i currently carry a 13º 3 wood and a 18º 5 wood, but i think im going to switch to carrying only one fairway wood and carry a 16º 4 wood instead so i can free up some room for either a hybrid or so i can put my 3 iron back in my bag....

Well where I'm from most of the courses are a joke... so the driver stays in the bag for the most part...

But on a legitimate course The Links At Hiawatha Landing (7,104 yards, par 72, 74.4/144) my lowest is 63... I've shot a 60 and a 61 but they were both on par-70 courses... (Hillendale and Elm Tree Respectfully) Where I hang my hat which is between Robert Trent Golf Course at Cornell and Ithaca Country Club... I've shot a couple of 64s... but average around 68 or 69... techinically... I'm only a +5 because of the fact most of my rounds are tournament rounds... the lowest a USGA handicap can be is techinically +3.5... So for USGA events that I will be attempting to qualify for in '09 i will be a +3.5 (unless I turn pro first)... But my biggest jump and I'll even go as far as my jump from 10 to scratch which took about 2 years... was course management and turning 3 shots into 2 inside 100 yards... Greens in Regulation will come with better course management... not saying i was bad or anything squandering ten shots a round inside of 100 yards... but the course management helped me score better inside 100 yards... because your chances are better from 50 yards in the fairway then 50 yards in the trees, or deep rough, etc...

I pulled the 5w out about 3-4 years ago in favor of the 2h (and have since replaced it with another 2h)... at that time I hit my 2h a touch further than the 5w and had better control. My 2h still lands pretty darn soft and it is better in the wind. I already had a high ball flight... so the 5w was like a moon ball. Now I can hit a lot more shots with the 2h than I think I could hit with a 5w... my hybrids (I carry a 2 and 3) are quite workable and give me great control.

Never had a 5-wood before November, it's saving me shots already!

Off the tee it's brilliant, very consistent, long in carry and easy to hit high, low, left, right - everything.

Off the deck - well it's easier than a 2iron, maybe not as easy as some hybrids from the rough but can get a great high trajectory coming into greens, long par 3's especially, nice soft landings!

Great club, absolutely love it!
