No glove + vardon grip = reduced slice ?

I was out at the range trying to work on improving my backswing (inspired by ks8829's thread on The Golf Swing Made Easy ) and wound up trying something different with my grip and glove that helped reduce my slice frequency dramatically, at least during this particular range session.

I decided today to practice without a glove _and_ switch to the Vardon grip, and found I was able to strike the ball better with my driver and longer clubs, and my horrible slice disappeared. I now have a slight hook with my shorter irons, but I think that issue should be easy to fix.

I was reading up on Ben Hogan's Five Lessons book this past week and his general history on the web and found he didn't use a glove, but used the overlapping/Vardon grip. I decided to try it out and found the results were pretty good.

I had been using the interlocking grip since I first took up golf this past summer, partially since Tiger Woods used the grip, and also since I have a right ringer finger injury that prevents me from gripping firmly with the finger. When using the interlocking grip I felt I had a snug hold of the club and I hit pretty pure with my short irons.

But I have also been fighting a horrible slice since this past August with my driver and woods. No matter what trick or tip I tried (and after many lessons) I would slice the ball with my driver about 95% of the time.

But this time with the new grip I was able to hit an almost pure shot with the driver (at the range). But as a side effect of the new grip I had a tendency to draw with the short irons (as mentioned above).

Can the glove diminish one's ability to feel grip pressure, as well as impact how one swings the club? I'm assuming most people on here hit fine with gloves on, but for me now it seems I have looser wrist action without my glove than having it on, which perhaps allows me to square the club face better than with my previous grip and use of a glove.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

If you can play without a golf glove then do it. I used to not wear one for a long time and I do think it adds to your feel of the club. However, when I seriously started to work on my game and went to the range a lot in the hot weather here in Columbia, SC it became difficult to hold on to the club after half a bucket. That is basically the only reason I started wearing a glove. Now I wear one all the time. As for you grip, you probably found the one that works best for you, that gives you better club control. Obviously it has helped you to get the clubface more closed at impact. Are you actually drawing with the irons or pulling? Maybe you are swinging a little flat with your irons. Try standing a little more upright to give yourself a slightly more vertical plane.
