Hey, I just need a little advice. I am a beginner, just started in july. I was using some hand me downs, then for my birthday I got a really inexpensive starter set. Once I got used to those clubs my scores came down drastically. I practice all the time and really care. I hit my irons high and straight. I am looking to invest in some better irons and was wondering what sets are best for a beginner. I'm looking to spend under 350. I have a few sets i was looking at.
they are adams rpm, adams a2, mizuno mx-19 , cobra cxi and cobra fp. any suggestions?

anyone? I really need advice

What are you trying to do with new irons that you cannot do with the irons that you have? What part of your game do you think needs the most improvement?

Do you feel your swing is repeatable enough to the point that a fitting would do you long term good?

yeah man, do it! i bought a set (for back-up) because of the ridiculous low price and played 36 holes with them and they are some really nice, forgiving irons (I bought the midsize). hell, for a $149 shipped, you just cant beat it. they look great at address too and since i bought the steel shafted set, they came with the Nippon shafts. the shafts alone are worth $150. you could actually buy a set of these, take the heads off, sell the shaft pulls and heads seperately, and make about $75 profit if you wanted to....

Wow, that Bridgestone set is a steal. I bought a set of A2s 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 7-PW with Winn grips for $199 plus tax at Edwin Watts when the A3s came out. Now that the A4s are out and Christmas shopping will be at an all time low, I suspect that you could purchase the A2s or A3s this month or January for very cheap. But is you don't see them cheaper than $200, go for the Briedgestone's for sure. Be sure to get them fitted for lie angle, etc. if possible (it really helps) Your swing path, tempo, and repeatability will likely change for the better as you play more, but your natural tendencies in the hitting zone won't change as much.

Love the A2s. My previous set was Golfsmith TGIs (which I also love---they are now discontinued) The TGIs were five year old technology and wanted tech upgrade. My favorite TGI clubs were the 2iron off the tee and 5iron off turf.

The A2s are great, took about one month to get used to looking at 5H and 6H. The 6H is now my favorite club in the bag (tied with the 4H, 7I, PW). The A2s cheat a bit in that they are 3-5*stronger through the bag (the PW is 43*). I purchased a MacGregor 50* Vfoil M55? Gap wedge (which I also love) to fill in the large gap between PW and 56 degree SW.

Bridgestones look nice. Adams A2s...I'm not a huge fan of this particular set. Take a look at some of the hogan clubs on rockbottomgolf.com. Look at some Nickents too.

If you want to shell out some extra cash, there's CG Golds for $400 and Wilson Staff Ci7 for $415. I have heard very good things about the wilsons.

As some posters have stated, some iron sets will boost your distance by making lofts stronger. If you have an older iron set, you may be playing a 48* PW. Sets now have 43* PW with the same length shaft... I know that you want to gain distance, but I think you would rather gain it without this inflation.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Adams line of clubs to anyone looking to purchase a new set of clubs. The technology put into these clubs are fantastic, and they are some of the best feeling non-blade clubs I have ever hit. You cant go wrong with Adams.

note: As far as buying clubs from RockBottomGolf, a friend bought a set of Tour Edge Bazookas as a starter set from them a few years back, and the distances were erratic. He took them to a pro shop here, and the lofts were all over the place, there was only a 2* difference between the 8 and 9 iron, but a 9* difference between the 8 and 7 iron. The guy at the shop said you get that a lot when you buy clubs at "bargain" prices from online stores, ebay, etc etc.

just my .02

you are doing the right thing by getting fitted. You may learn alot about your swing/stance/etc from the results. Definitely stretch before going to the store, wear some flexible/relaxed clothing, and some sneakers with good grip. You don't want to get out of your car on a cold day, then try hitting a 7 iron with dress shoes on.

Is there a real difference between the new equipment released and the 2 yr old equipment. Like i said i'm interested in the a3 or a2 series but how much different are they? And how much different are those sets compared to the adams rpm set?

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
