When i swing, my divot is always going straight or even a little to the right. but my ball slices pretty bad. like goes straight and then fades off to the right.

when I look at the bottom of my irons, the tee marks are slicing too. so i have the right swing path but i cant square the face. any ideas?

Hi,

I guess yours hands (and left arm) goes too far and then you flipped the club and/or Stiffness of forearms;... Try to "release" earlier with softarms/hands. regards,

divots can determine swing path but not so much whether club face is open or closed (cause of slices and hooks)

try a couple of these things on the range.

1. Instead of cocking your wrists toward you at the top, cock them parallel to shaft/swing plane--and not a severe wrist cock (I'm not explaining this really well.

2. Read John Jacobs practical golf--he describes the hitting zone better than anyone imo.

3. Stay down on the ball throughout the swing, especially at impact

4. hands ahead of club head at impact, with back of left hand (if you are righty) pointing somewhat downward at impact.

5. agree with the releasing of the club head. this is difficult to describe and is all about timing.

what way are those tee marks showing on the bottom? slicing shouldn't be a problem if the mark goes in a slight diagonal from toe to heel.

if it's heel to toe, you aren't closing the club and releasing it, and you need get those wrists to turn over. also, check your stance and your alignment. Everything starts from there. Line up your body first, hips to shoulders to knees to feet and make sure it is perpendicular to the target. A splayed foot can make you slice pretty badly.

One more thing to check, how close you are to the ball. just hang your arms down from your body loose to find where your hands should be in regards to your body and hold the club there. Wherever the clubhead is should be where the ball needs to be.

Hope this helps.

i suggest just the opposite....when i slice badly, i open up my front foot which helps me release the club head better.

Obviously, your swing path is ok, but your club face is WIDE open!

Your hands are TOO FAR FORWARD in the hitting zone, AND (possibly) the ball is too far back in your stance, AND/OR you are SWAYING (forward) out in front of the ball.

You definitely have to release your hands, but get your fundamentals correct first (alignment, ball position, HAND position), and then work on releasing the club SLIGHTLY before the bottom of the swing.

Release too soon and to quick, and you'll HOOK IT...

Good Luck...

Are you a Lefty? Because if you are a Righty, your divots should be straight or turning to the left. If your divots are going to the right, your clubface is open at impact.

I had this very problem with my woods & saw my teaching pro about it today. The divot marks were perfectly straight. It turned out I was late turning my hands over on the swing through thus causing the club face to be open. He's got me concentrating on turning my hands over more so that the woods are square at impact. Hope this helps.

The lie angle of the clubs could be too flat.
You could be too upright at address.
Your swing plane could be too high.
Your left arm could be too tense as you swing through the ball.
You could be taking the club too far back on the backswing, then looping it way outside the target line on your downswing.
You may not be rotating through to the target on the follow through.

Agree that for right handed golfers the divots should be straight at the target or slightly left. After hitting the ball, the club should take a divot in front of the ball, and most great ball strikers would have continued rotation so their divots are slightly left of the ball flight line. If you are leaving the clubface open, think about the right elbow staying in close and turning through the shot with the body while the left elbow is turned down -- the club cannot be open then, unless your grip is all wrong.

Very good summary ! Too many times perception for "advice" "hit down the line" (for 2 planers) causes "urge" to be too stiff and/or analyzing divots in wrong way. As you said divots should point slighty left " after hitting the ball, the club should take a divot in front of the ball, and most great ball strikers would have continued rotation so their divots are slightly left of the ball flight line " reagrds,

Are your divots wide or narrow? Narrow divots could indicate an open clubface.

I play all my shots with a slight fade at the end of them. Anywhere from 3- yards to feet, but my shots always cut/fade.

I can roll my hands more often, but I perfer to hit with a more open club face. All my misses are to the right. Anybody else use this strategy?

Do you only it hit that way with your irons, or also with your woods? It looks like that you are comming too much from the inside and then you are left the club face open at the impac position. Please, post a video
