2 iron shaft trim

I'm missing a shaft from a 3 iron, but I have an extra shaft from a 2 iron. Could I trim the butt of the shaft to a 3 iron length? Or do most shaft trimming come from the tip side?

take it to a pro shop, they will do it correctly. The only thing i do to my clubs is regrip...how can you mess that up? and even if you do, its a easy and reversable fix!

Shafts are generally trimmed from the butt end, so you should be fine there. You really need to find out the length of your original 3 iron shaft, so that you can cut the correct size. You can do this either by finding the original specs on the manufacturers website, or by ringing them up. You could also guess the correct length by looking at the progression of sizes from the PW up.

You then need to cut the shaft. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself as it hard to do well with a hacksaw. Your pro-shop should have a shaft cutter, which is effectively two circular blade that clamp on either side of the shaft. The shaft is then rotated between them, cutting through it. It would just need regripping as normal.

I would recommend you get your proshop to do this, as there are a number of things to go wrong, and it is much easier to do with the correct equipment.

NOT TRUE. Depends on the shaft. Some shafts are tip trimmed for correct flex THEN butt trimmed to final length. 2 iron should be 1/2" longer than your 3 iron.

Don't give him "generally" and "I think" advise. Your not doing him any favor there. Once again What kind of shaft and head?

I simply gave him advice based on my experience of club repairs, and that is that the club is normally trimmed from the butt end. Certainly for the type of job the OP requires doing, I wouldn't suggest trimming from the tip end of the club.

Certainly though, the shaft and head do make a difference, so a bit more information might be helpful.

There was also no mention of whether the head accepts a parallel or tapered tip shaft, makes a BIG difference as tapered tip shafts can not be trimmed from the tip as a general rule. My best advice is to go to the shaft manufacturers web site and look up specification documents, just about all of them make them freely available.

If you are dealing with taper shafts you really don't have a choice - you have to butt trim. You'll probably end up with a shaft that is somewhat "flexxier" than your missing 3i. This won't be a night and day difference and a bit more flex in the longer irons isn't necessarily a bad thing anyway. If you are dealing with parallel shafts, then the vast majority of those are tip trimmed. And you could conceivably have a parallel 2i shaft and a taper hosel in your 3i (or vice versa). That is a different problem. dave
