if the weather holds. It was looking good for a while, but the forecast looks yuck right now. Anyways, my choices (played the course before, not real long): 3i hybrid, 9 iron, putter (required).

What would you play?

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Seeing as how you said "it's not real long" i'd probably bring my 4-5 iron, 52 gap wedge and my putter.

I thought about that, almost went 4-iron, but I didn't know what the rough would be like. If there's some unkempt stuff around, my 4-iron probably won't be good to me. I figure the 3i hybrid can get me as long as 225, but I can also ratchet that down, and even out of the rough, just hit something 150-175 if I need to.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I played the same thing a couple years ago and went 5 wood, 8 iron and putter. Next time (which should be this spring) I'm thinking about 4 hybrid, 7 iron and putter. 4H will get me 200ish, the 7 will get me 150 and less, plus I can chip with it or hit shorter shots easily (I just hope I don't end up in greenside bunker).

7 iron, sand wedge.

I trust any shot with my 7 iron and if I rip it, it'll go close to 185/190, normal swing 175. need that wedge for chips. I feel like I can vary my 7 iron a lot more and change distances easier than any club.

I'd look at the scorecard and do a little math, but on a shorter course it would prob a 4 hybrid and an 8 iron along with the putter.

7i and my 56 wedge. I could get more distance off the tee with the hybrid, but I can't control it at short range.

5 iron, 9 iron. Maybe a hybrid, but it is harder to punch than an iron. One bit of advice... if you can't hit the longer club far enough to allow you to hit the shorter club to the green, lay well back to give yourself more of a full shot into the green. But don't be so far you have to flush the longer club to get there. Say you hit the 5 iron 180, then you might should hit the tee shot so you have 170 into the green. That way you can choke down a little and control the shot better. Have fun.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

My 3i hybrid and a 9 iron or gap wedge depending on the course. 3i is so versatile, off the tee, fairway, rough, punch shots and chipping, other club is the scoring club.

5iron, 56* wedge and my putter. i actually played a round the other day with a 5iron being my longest club because i only intended on playing the executive course, but the pro let us on the front 9 of the regular course instead of going back for another 9 on the executive. i carried my 5iron about 215, rolled about 225.

Wouldn't that be a 3 club challenge?

Any version of this I heard of always includes putter, so the only question is which two clubs you picked otherwise.

I went with the 3i hybrid and 9 iron. It was windy as all get out, making the selection a bit less "scientific." Had to be 30-40 mph gusts and the temps were low 30's, wind chill was probably 20s. One guy in our group kept hitting hooks/draws but you could literally see the wind lift and accelerate them mid-flight; one ended up two holes over. In retrospect, I probably would have preferred maybe 4-iron (to keep it lower off the tee) and a PW. The greens were rock hard, nearly impossible to hold, so it was easy to find traps. I was able to play decent shots with the 9 iron, but just a little more loft would have helped a lot. Out of 20+ guys, best round was an 89. I shot a 98. Greens were rock hard but the speed was actually erratic, and I didn't make any putt of any consequence, 3-putted several.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
