Anyone got a cheaper good alternative to the mighty Pro-V1?

I want to try and stick to one or two different balls this year but ProV1's are expensive for an 18 handicapper as i lose one every 27holes or so. I play very regularly as i am 16 and just go to school 5 days a week. Preferably a high spinning ball like a ProV1 - without the £35 ($50) per dozen price tag!
What I Play:
Wilson Mini Stand Bag | PING G10, 10.5°, Proforce V2 HL S | PING G5, 15°, 18°, Aldila NV 75 S | PING G5, 19°, Aldila VS Proto By You 80 S
Mizuno MX200 4-PW S | Ping Tour W 50/12 X | Ping Tour W 58/TS X | A selection of putters, all 35.5 inches.

The Bridgestone e5+ is a urethane covered 2 piece ball that in US runs about $27. Because of the Urethan, which is the same cover material used in the more expensive 'tour' level balls, it has quite a bit of spin (not as much as Pro-V1, but it's almost half the cost). Also, it might be worth checking on buying used balls. Here is the site I have used in the past for this (and they do ship internationally):

http://www.knetgolf.com/

If you purchase 'Mint' or 'Grade A' condition balls they will be in very good shape. 'Grade B' and lower may contain blemishes or other imperfections. Refinished usually have a coating on the outside that may (or may not) change playing characteristics. I saw they have Pro-V1s (2007/2008 models), Grade A for $24.99 right now. They are advertising 20% off, but I'm not sure if that price is with that discount or not.

The Top Flight Gamer is also a decent, multipiece ball, but it will not spin as much.

I bought 6 dozen, brand new (authentic, in sleeves and boxes) Callaway Tour i on eBay for $182.51 shipped (They came from a PGA pro in Iowa). That comes out to $30.42 a dozen. That's the same price as the Bridgestone e6+ and e5+, the Callaway Hx Hot Bite, and the Titleist NXT extreme.

I have been playing Pro-V's and Srixon premium balls for years...and earlier last season, in a moment of desperation picked up some Bridgeston Treos ($20.95 at Wal-Mart) and was AMAZED how nice tey were!

Great distance, soft feel, grabbed the greens great...very stable in cross wind.....Maybe my ball of choice this season!

i play Top Flite D2 Feel ($15 per 15 balls) or the titleist NXT Tour ($30 per dozen). i really like them both. the D2 has a little less spin than the NXT Tour so i use them on a given day when im not hitting drives all that well. helps reduce the slice...

check out this website:

you can get gently used balls for a fraction of the retail price. i ordered 2 dozen NXT Tours for $20!

Top Flite D2 Feel is a great ball (I use this and e5+ and actually prefer the Feels). Just ordered some Gamers from golfballs.com $15.95 per dozen (they are overruns-mint condition, but some company overordered logo balls, thus they went back to the stock room.

If you are only losing one ball every 27 holes why would price be a concern. I know after 9 I wish I would lose my ball so I can hit one in better shape.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

JJB sports sell 2 dozen ProV1 lake balls for £20, that's what I play. If you want new balls then I would suggest Srixon AD333. You are making the right decision by choosing to play the same ball instead of swapping and changing.

I play the Taylormade TP Red LDP ball close to the price of the Pro V , and Taylormade sells a Burner LDP ball for around $25, these play very good , fly good , decent greenside , the only reason I don't play them and many cheaper balls the "clack" noise off my putter drives me nuts. The higher priced balls have the better outer cover that doesn't make that noise. And you could always buy used and logo Pro v's off e-bay at a cheaper price.

I really like the Bridgestone B330S, but it's another $40/doz ball new. The original poster was looking for cheaper alternatives to these premium $40+ golf balls.

The e5+ ball is about $15/doz cheaper than the B330S (and other premiums). It is only a 2 piece ball so it spins a little more off driver and has a little softer feel than the B330S, but because it has urethane cover (same as what is used in almost all premium) it has spin that is not quite as much as those balls, but much more than vast majority of cheaper balls.

Ouch, I just ordered 8 dozen for $45 with free shipping from them

If you want to use premium balls but not pay the price get AAAA quality used ones from lostgolfballs. Get $30 dollar a dozen balls for $5.00. If you lose one in a pond no big deal.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
