its a personal choice really..most people here will tell you that you are missing out by not playing a hybrid, that a two iron is too hard to hit for an average player. But thats not the truth.

If you can play a two iron, great! i mean, if you can hti it 9/10 times where you want it, thats a good play. I trade my 2 iron for a 2 hybrid on courses where the rough isnt too thick, or realy tight fairways, i like the 2 iron. If the course has nasty rough, i take the 2H.

The 2 iron has a specific role, and if you like it, and can hit it, its a great club to have.

Can you hit your 2-iron 235 yards.... from a nested lie in 3-inch rough.... and hold the green? If so, no you are not missing out on anything. If not, then yes, it could be suggested that you are missing out on something.

You are not, however, alone in continuing to carry a 2-iron. While a dying breed, 2-irons are not yet extinct.

No, I cannot hit it out of 3 inches of rough haha. Have any suggestions of hybrids to give a shot at that are workable??

A buddy of mine carries a 2-iron - and the rest of his grandfather's old blades. One issue with him getting new clubs is the lack of 2-irons in those sets.

That having been said, use whichever clubs you like. I'm guessing by the question that you love owning and using a 2-iron. If you switch to a hybrid, you might pick up something in {consistency, distance, height, ability to hit out of rough}, but lose something in that love. And that love might cost you strokes. I mean, I love it when I pull out my 3-iron to hit a shot. I feel really manly and I think that helps me hit the 3-iron. I'm guessing you get that from your 2-iron. And I think that's a good thing, if it leads to a good shot.

Whatever works for you. I agree you are probably losing something by not having that loft in a hybrid, but at least you aren't trying to pimp the 1 iron. I still see the occasional golfer with a 2 iron, so you're not alone.

btw, there's only 1 guy I have personally met that carries a 1 iron, and he announces it every time he is about to hit it. Which usually ends up being a 200 yard slice.

I like to use my 2iron when it is windy and i want to keep the ball low. hybrids are designed to get the ball up quickly and land softly. I also have a 2hybrid, but i typically carry 3 wedges instead of either 2iron or hybrid. It all depends on the conditions you play and your ability level. For most people 2irons are very tough to hit consistently, and thus the invention of the hybrid. Oh, and about hitting something 235 from 3" of rough... take your medicine and hit a shot into wedge range and you'll be better off, lol.

Irons are more difficult to hit far from the rough which is what hybrids are designed for. If you haven't got a hybrid, and hit a fairway wood to any standard, get one because they are easier to hit than fairway woods, and can be used effectively from a wider variety of different lies.

If nothing else, a hybrid is more versatile. I carried a 2 iron only about 3 years ago and hit it well, but once I got used to hitting a hybrid (it's a little different) it was not even a close decision to drop the 2. If you're a great ball striker and do not miss the sweet spot and like to work the ball a lot, then a 2 Iron is probably fine, but if not then a hybrid is probably a better choice. A LOT of professionals now carry at least 1 hybrid (and some 2-3). However, all hybrids are not created equal or made for the same player. You have to try several to find one for you and it does take a little time to get accustomed to hitting it. I have owned several different models over the last few years (and tried almost everything available) before finally settling on the Mizuno CLK Fli-Hi hybrids I carry.

The best I've tried are the Adams Idea Pro w/ the VS "By You" shaft. Very square at address, no draw bias and offer the best of iron-like workability in a hybrid. The 16 and 20 degree versions are had to beat, in my opinion..... and, yes, they will play the "described shot".... presuming you've got the swing.

You can still find this older version Adams at a few Golf Shops and on "Flea-bay", at some good price points. Good luck...... I think you will be surprised.

this, like everything else in golf, in purely based on personal preference. if you can hit the 2 iron well, then why fix what isnt broken?? if you think you will benefit from the extra forgiveness of a hybrid, then by all means get a hybrid. i have the taylormade burner 19* hybrid and i really like. there are all sorts of options out there. just find what works for you can go with it.

so overall, if you hit your 2 iron well, then dont fix what isnt broken,

I think it would'nt hurt to have one to swap out ifyou need to,I carry one and love it, as far as finding one that's workable Taylormade makes a TP model and Titleist makes a real good one I'm sure you won't have a problem with either of these I think there more consistant than a iron and easier to get out of the rough, all you have to do is put a good swing on one of those babies and watch it go.

I'm with you, I love the 2-iron. Up until late this year, I didn't even carry fairway woods much less hybrids. My bag consisted of; driver, 2-9, PW, GW, SW, LW, P. That combo has worked great for me since I was about 15 years-old.

If you look at my sig, you'll see that I dropped the 2-iron in favor of a 3-wood late this year. I did this only because, with my new irons, I hit the ball bit further and my 3-iron has become nearly as versatile as my old 2-iron. Besides, Titleist doesn't make a ZM 2-iron and I prefer a matching set for consistency (although I am looking for a 695MB 2-iron pretty hard, that's close enough to a ZM).

As for the question of what do I do when I'm at 235 in the thick rough? I guess the no brainier here is, I try to avoid that situation at all costs. If that fails however, I'd play the ball an inch or two back in my stance (forces a steeper swing), aim slightly to the left and open the club face a little. For this shot, I'll have a firmer grip with my right hand (along w/the steeper swing, this helps keep the hosel from grabbing and turning the club face) and I'll swing a bit harder than usual (90-95% instead of my usual 80%) while abbreviating my follow through. Depending on greenside hazards and such, I'd likely hit a 4-iron for this shot. The ball is going to come out hot and low and will go a bit further than normal due to the extra speed on the clubhead. If I strike the ball solid, there will be enough spin to stop the ball, no less than I'd achieve with a hybrid or fairway wood anyway. The trick here is to keep velocity up and control the club face. Of course, when my 80% 6-iron is moving at 94mph, I may have a leg up on the former (velocity) compared to many.

Solid long iron play, especially out of the rough, is something that you need velocity to pull off so I totally understand why many golfers are moving to the hybrids. I may be headed there myself someday.

i put my 2 iron away about 10 years ago (Im 40 now). back then i could stripe my Titleist DCI 962 2 iron. now its a hybrid (or a 5 wood). i do think you are missing out if you arent carrying a hybrid. tons of tour players carry hybrids now and everytime i see one of those little "player lesson" segments during the golf tournements they say the same thing. and im pretty sure they know what theyre talking about (Leadbetter, Miller, etc). give one a try! it cant hurt?

The "pros" also say that amateurs should not carry an iron longer than a 6..

the day i give up my 4 iron is they day i quit golf. Giving up my 3 iron will be hard, but i can see that happening..but never my 4 iron, thats my go too club lol

you arent missing anything by carrying a 2iron. i personally feel no need to carry any iron more than a 5iron, but thats because i hit that 215. i carry a 2hybrid because i like it out of the rough and i can choke down on it to give me more control and make up the distance for say a 3 or 4iron. keep the 2iron if u hit it well, if not, try a 2iron hybrid.
