I wear hearing aids (and I'm only 39). When I go to the range I tend to turn them off. I do this more because it helps me concentrate a little more, but I guess it also helps with the sound from the modern drivers. My current driver is an older model, so I don't think it's as bad as the newer ones, though. I'm glad I do not own the original Sumo 2 - that thing made me wish I was deaf.

Yes, just about anything over 80 decibels is considered damaging. If you listed to music with headphones on, listen to the radio in the car, walk outside on a busy street, go to concerts regularly, live next to an airport.........you are guarenteed to have more hearing loss from all the other noise polution we are exposed to, the driver decibels are just a drop in the bucket. I suppose you could wear earplugs on the range/course. But if you do, prepare yourself for appropriate chastizement.

I guess their report is plausable...but possible to a limited population.

The Decible rating to begin (temp or long term) hearing loss needs to be at 85 db or greater...and as PiKapp said, some heads, specifically that annoying Sumo had to have exceeded that level...it is horrible.

Also, as a person gets older the hair sensors within the cochlea can naturally degenerate...and that could increase the damage from loud noises.

But on the other hand, usually the sound is louder as the swing speed is faster...and normally the older you get, the slower the swing speed...so it would make sense that the swing speed would degenerate in parallel to the natural protection in the hearing canal.

But obviously, thats speculation....and many other variables need to be explored...for example, I know the sound (when we've hit them indoors) is much louder than outdoors.

So, I am certain it can happen....which kinda makes me happy that while I do not personally wear ear plugs, I always have my MP3 player with noise cancelling ear buds on at the range.

Interesting article!

Thanks!

Damaging sounds are rated by dosage, not just by loudness. The damage potential is a formula that figures in the decibel level and the time of the exposure. The higher the decibel level the shorter the exposure that will cause damage.

What?

its actually being taken quite seriously by some professionals. paula creamer for instance, has started to wear earmuffs to protect her ears

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

My local driving range reopened last month after rennovations. As part of the changes they put up tarps around pairs of stations and heating elements to allow more comfortable practice during cold weather.

However, now that the hitting stations are enclosed the sound does not dissipate as well as before. After the guy behind me hit a driver a few times I could really feel the sound in my ears. At another range 20 miles Southeast they also have the tarp-enclosed stations, but have sound-proofing material next to each mat, which greatly reduces the crack from the drivers.

I just ordered some gun-range quality earplugs from Amazon. What hearing protection would be best, the earplugs or the full gun-range-quality earmuffs?

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

Just play Titliest Drivers... they sound more "normal," but normal is no longer persimmon normal (I loved that sound.)

i play a speed ld which is supposed to be really loud according to this study...i'm a good ball striker and yes it is loud, but it's not that loud...fast pitch softball players and non-professional baseball players are subjected to much more intense sounds when they play aluminum and alloy bats. i used to live a block from the baseball stadium at my university and on game nights i could hear when players hit the ball. i don't know who conducted this study, but it seems bogus and probably like half the other horrendous stuff people publish in the name of science....

I did notice some clubs like my Driver can be quite loud, but would never think it would do permanent damage? Can't be worse than the everyday noise we all deal with. And to start this worry off from a 50 something year old having hearing loss? Come on getting to that age there will be hearing loss regardless of what your doing, so to give some blame to a golf club....PSST. If your worried about it that much a bag or box of in ear foam earplugs are cheap but then how an you hear the guy on the next fairway yell FORE!!

The British Health & Safety gestapo are at it again. They wont stop at anything, they are big buisness .Once they get their foot in the door of golf clubs we will all be standing on the first tee with Hard hats ,steel caped golf shoes, high visability vests, one of the group will have to be a qualified first aider and we will have to use sponge balls incase they hit anyone.Once they have finnished with us they pass the baton to the politically correct subdivision who make sure all games are 4 balls which must include one person from an ethnic minority, one homosexual and one person who is physically challenged, blind or both. Ahhhhhhh the pleasures of living in a democracy

Enjoy your round

LOL

Now that sounds like an idea. I wear 2 hearing aids. I wonder if I can convince TaylorMade it's because of their driver? Get Jackie Chiles on the phone for me.

    • The dreaded 6 o'clock shadow. 🤣
    • 47+49 for a 96. Just lost it today. Two way miss off the tee. Could not hit a decent iron. Three putted like at least 8 holes. Not good when the short game is the best part of the day 😭😭
    • Phillyk is very close by. Ok, I understand how the watch and tags are meant to be used, but I was just curious how it actually works. I can't really think of any other way than what I mentioned above. No worries. If it works it works. I'll probably pick one up. My co-worker mentioned a free app called 18 Birdies which offers similar services. However I personally do not like keeping my phone in my pocket while golfing, nor do I want to be clicking around on the phone while out on the course. I toss my phone in my bag and leave it there until I am done golfing. Tapping a club head to a watch seems wat more convenient.
    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.
