when you do controlled greenside checkshots,
how do you guys position the ball and club face?

I keep the club face as is from my normal wedge ball position then just move the ball back approx. 1 1/2 ball length back depends how much I want ball to check and just hit down.

I however read from some article that opening club face as much as you move the ball back is more affective

any thoughts on this, pls?

I just tilit my wedge forward to where it still feels comfortable, put the ball back in my stance, face the target with my whole body, and try to pinch it. I tried opening the blade and it seems to hard to control. Just my .02

If winning isn't everything why do they keep score?

I usually play from the center of my stance, but usually play from an open stance. It actually appears that it is back but its not.I never open the face unless i'm trying a high or medium flop shot out of the rough to which i play foward in my stance.

How exactly do you perform a high flop? Everytime I attempt this (which isn't often anymore) I come in super fat. There have been times when my whole club head gets absorbed by a wet ground.

When I try and play a flop shot, maybe once a round if that, I use my 60, put the ball forward in my stance, open the club face up, choke down 3/4 of the way down the grip, open my stance quite a bit with both of my feet pointing at the target and my knees bent pretty heavily, take aim a couple feet to the left of the target and try to catch clean. As for how far or how hard to swing, I just go with feel depending on how open I have my 60. Someone will probably have a better answer but this has worked for me and has made me pretty consistent hitting a flop shot. Not really an easy shot to hit.

Just a little side note: there is a lot of interesting information in this thread...and if you want to try out a different technique, for goodness' sake, do it at the practice area, NOT in the middle of a round (like I did today). That is all!
