I always repair as many as I can with as much time as I have on a particular green. I get really sick of seeing people NOT fix their marks.

I hate to call a particular group out, but on my home course, I notice a lot of the seniors not repairing anything. If you can get around the course for 18, walk on the green and pick up your ball when you're done--you should be able to AT LEAST repair your own ball marks.

While I don't walk around "searching" for them, I'll repair any and all that I come across as I walk around the green preparing to putt.

It's a real treat for me to fix my own ball marks - they are rare But I'll usually fix them as I see them if time permits.

Repairing ball marks, picking up tees from the tee box, and filling in divots should be instructed by the club house or starter to everyone before a round. I am shocked that some courses encourage poor habits by not filling their sand containers for divot repairs or not providing a little bucket to put crushed tees in at every tee box. There should also be a container of sand +/- grass seed on every cart to fill in divots.

Many golf courses are as much to blame for poor habits as much as the novice or ignorant player.

Back at Penn State it wouldn't be unusual for me to be able to fix a half dozen ball marks on the greens just from edge to mine. I mean, I know it's a public course, but come on! I miss the days when they let you take cheap, cheap, cheap repair tools for free. Now the marketing people've gotten hold of the idea and want to make money instead of preserve the course. Meh...

The three worst groups I've seen about this are: 1) Frat-boy-ish s with their popped collars and complete lack of etiquette and desire to learn it; 2) Tween/teen golfers not on the high school team; and 3) Old men, particularly 60-plus-year-old alums who think that the school owes them something for having gone there. Now, there are exceptions (there are always exceptions!), but that's what generalizing is for.

A lack of respect for the course never fails to annoy me...

I've been playing for 25 years now, and it certainly seems like less people are repairing them. I read a story a couple years ago suggesting that riding carts/buggies may at least contribute to this because when walking you can usually see your ball mark from coming into green at same angle that ball did. When riding, players are usually approaching green from either the side or the ball of the green and that makes it more difficult to see the ball mark. I agree that is true - it is more difficult to see ballmarks from those angles. But I also think that players just practice basic golf etiquette less.

At a minimum, I look diligently to find and repair mine. Then if I happen across any others, I'll fix them. I don't go walking the green looking for pitch marks to repair, though.

I tend to fix as many as I can find on the green. Will only be nicer for me the next time I am there.

Also, it keeps my mind off my putt especially when I am closest to the pin and waiting for the rest of the group to make their putts.

When I hole out first it keeps me on the green instead of giving into my urge to hussle over to the next tee box before the others hole out.

P.S. Of course I am still when others are about to make their putt, definately not fixing stuff then. (For clarification)

What's your policy on repairing ball marks on the green?

At this point in my game I seldom leave a ball mark (once or twice a round) but I always try to fix any I see, as long as I don't bother people or slow game play down.

I always fix my own and others that I see even when (and this is sad and unbelievable) my playing partners give me grief for repairing ball marks. But, some of the guys who tease me about repairing ball marks are the same guys that kick their ball into a better lie and then record their score as legitimate. Go figure

I always fix mine, and at least one other. I was taught that from the beginning by my high school coach. Time allowing, I'll fix more.

i played a course the other day that looked like it hailed balls on every green... i can only fix so many pitchmarks so basically im just improving my putting line...

my home course the marshalls usually help fix pitchmarks an teebox divots when we open up or before we shut down... and since they dont wanna do it very often... the proshop guys and the starters emphasize fixing and replacing... hence the reason its such a great course to play on

If you get caught by or reported to the ranger on my home course, you will be suspended for not repairing ball marks.

Repairing my ball marks is a no-brainer like closing the zipper of my pants.

I never repair 'em, I figure since I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt, everyone will assume I have no etiquette anyway, so why bother trying...

I miss the days when they let you take cheap, cheap, cheap repair tools for free.

One of the courses near me has a bowl of repair tools with a sign stating, "By accepting this free repair tool, you hereby swear to repair your own pitch mark plus two others on each green." Great idea. Sadly, it doesn't seem to work too well as the greens are pretty ratty... but i like the sentiment.

(btw, I was of course kidding -- I repair all my (regrettably rare) pitch marks, and usually at least one other per green)

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
