Hi, I have my Clubs in tune for the new season already, so Im working on the short game, I have never even learned to putt properly (this will be 2nd year of golfing). So I picked up a 8 foot practice green and tried out some putters and ended up going with a 34" odyssey sabertooth and could not be happier.

When you hit these white hot putters on the sweet spot it feels like you just putted into a stick of butter. Its the most amazing feeling I ever seen which is why I got the putter.

I learned the correct position for putting through video jug, and now working on it, but I find I only hit that buttery sweet spot 3/10 times. I am hitting the club in the center I know that, but it must be either too high or too low for that money feeling. Even though the ball is still giving a straight roll and going to the hole

So how do you hit the sweetspot on the putter consistently, its so hard to tell the angle of attack of your putter at impact. I have the ball slightly forward in my stance so I THINK im hitting it just barely on the upswing and Ive tried conventional and forward press stances, both seem to give similar results...

Any tips here? Also the Putter Loft is 2 degrees and its a 34" length so I dont know if that info helps or not.

Thanks

You got to ask yourself, is it more important to get the feeling of hitting the sweet spot or getting more putts to drop into the hole? I have never found a connection between hitting the sweet spot of the putter and making putts. If youre hitting the center of the putter face most of the time thats good enough. So 3/10 sweet spot hits are probably fine. Your direction and speed are more important.

I couldnt agree more, I mean I drop these putts like no tommorow the putter is so balanced its harder miss then sink the putt to be honest, but I would really love to hit that sweet spot more, gives me chills lol

So what your saying is Buttering the putter isnt as easy as one would think and its one of those rare gems when you do it? It would seem it would be so easy to hit a sweet spot on a 2mph mallet putter but I guess not.

I think it is rare to hit a putter directly on the sweet spot. Perhaps professionals do it everytime but for us its rare. I probably hit my 7 iron more on the sweet spot than i do my putter.

But its not a big deal unless your missing the ball on either the extreme heel or toe. As long as youre in the general center of the putter face most of the time you dont really lose anything in distrance control or line over the sweetspot.

Ok well that makes me feel better cause I know I have a good stroke and can sink an 8 foot putt consistently , but 30% sweetspot. Its true the travel is very close, just like I said, feels cool.

I never think about hitting on the sweet spots for shorter putts, anything I expect to make, just focused on hitting to my target. I do think more about it for longer putts, making sure you get the contact you want when you're hitting it across a 60' green

So I picked up a 8 foot practice green and tried out some putters and ended up going with a 34" odyssey sabertooth and could not be happier.

First I want to say I am not a good putter as well and I am sure someone will be more competent to tell you a better advise, but reading your mail I can try to help with several things.

If you want to know where exactly you hit the putter put some cream on it (do not worry insert will survive it)and you will see where you hit it precisely. Before that try to find out if the sweet spot of the putter is really at the marked position (guess you did that already, usually is OK). You are mentioning 2 deg of putter loft. Well I just know a bit of putter fitting and I am aware that there are many variables on proper putter fitting; but for the start (when you have the putting mat as well) I suggest that you put the digital camera behind you on the floor and hit some 10 putts. Then put the camera facing you e.g. perpendicular to the putting line. After analyze you will see if your stroke is jerky (as mine sometimes) or smooth. Next if you see it is a bit jerky for me that means if you have a proper -stacked stance that the putter is not hanging naturally below the arms and you should correct it. Ball position will vary a bit in relation to the type of putter you use. Be sure to use a proper stroke for the putter you use. Stroke should feel smooth and you should be able to hold your finish with ease (look the pros)….I will finish here hope that will help a bit. Well if you will find all marks at the center of the putter forget the mentioned camera and the rest... Also – hope you understood my bad english…(smiling allowed).

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
